Opportunity Description: John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site is looking for individual and group volunteers to help the park in areas that include visitor services, special event operations, and historical research. Position titles include Volunteer Park Ranger, Special Event Volunteer, Library Assistant, Computer Assistant, and Administrative Aide. The Volunteer Coordinator’s office welcomes proposals to create brand new positions or tailor current volunteer positions to meet the particular needs of the individuals. Businesses are also encouraged to allow its workers to assist the park with special projects that often generate dramatic results and favorable local attention. Non-profit community organizations and youth groups can also help the park considerably on beautification and conservation projects.
Opportunity Description: Become a campground host along the Wild and Scenic Klamath River! The Klamath National Forest has an opening for a campground host at the Curly Jack Campground. The campground includes 16 sites (4 group sites) and is located in the town of Happy Camp, California along the Klamath River at an elevation of about 1,000 feet. The community of Happy Camp is approximately 75 miles west of Yreka via highway 96. Host duties include talking to visitors about local points of interest, informing visitors of regulations, gathering visitor use information, and performing light maintenance and cleanup around the campground. A campsite with hookups will be provided for the volunteer. Volunteer campground hosts are an important part of our recreation program—hosts are often the first contact for forest visitors. Opportunity Description: Area Information Zion National Park is famous for its majestic sandstone monoliths, slot canyons, climbing routes, beautiful colors, hanging gardens and unusual rock formations - attracting 2.7 million visitors annually. The backcountry of Zion ranges from 4,000 feet in elevation in the desert to 8,000 feet on the plateaus. Many of the hiking/backpacking trails are steep and strenuous. Zion also has many canyoneering routes that require rappelling skills. Good physical condition is necessary to enjoy Zion's adventurous backcountry. Position Duties 50% Backcountry Permits Desk – At the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, you will issue backcountry permits and collect fees, assist visitors with planning their backcountry trips, answer telephone questions, educate visitors on LNT ethics and techniques, and provide information on trail conditions, hazards, flash floods, and safety. 50% Backcountry Patrols and Projects - Hike trails and canyoneering routes (rappel routes) to make visitor contacts, check permits and report on trail conditions. Opportunities may exist to assist in Search and Rescue operations. Assist with Resource Management projects, including peregrine falcon monitoring, archeology site monitoring and exotic plants removal/native plant restoration. This is a physically strenuous position, involving day hiking, overnight backpacking and canyoneering in desert conditions. Skills Prior backcountry and public contact experience is essential. Some of the skills that will help you get the most out of this position are day hiking, backpacking, map reading, climbing or rappelling. Excitement and love for the backcountry are the most valuable skills of all. Housing Area Housing - shared housing will be provided in the park. Transportation A car is recommended, but not required. Applicant should have a valid driver’s license. Uniform Volunteer shirts and hat will be provided by the park. The incumbent must adhere to safety guidelines and protocols. • Volunteer will spend lots of time on their feet: standing for long periods of time at contact stations, hiking moderate to strenuous trails during summer, etc. – comfortable, supportive shoes recommended. • Volunteer may be exposed to heat, sun, high elevation, various weather conditions, steep, uneven terrain, and possibly desert animals while roving. Opportunity Description: Zion National Park in conjunction with the community of Springdale, Zion Natural History Association, Zion Harvest and Z-Arts will celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day in Springdale on Saturday April 21, 2012. Live music and a farmer’s market will be accompanied by vendors, activities and demonstrations about native plant sources, alternative energy, “Leave No Trace” principles, solar ovens, environmental art and sustainable products. Kids can participate in games and readings of Dr. Suess’ “The Lorax”. Opportunity Description: Volunteer will assist Zion’s Green Team efforts through various projects and assignments, helping the park to further reduce waste and energy use, and provide input to enable greater sustainability. Volunteer will gain valuable experience in green technology with new and ongoing solar power projects in Zion National Park. Position Duties include: • Collecting bags of aluminum cans and plastic/glass bottles from recycle containers at various park locations. Load bags into truck and reline recycle containers. Empty paper bins from offices; • Performing manual tasks involving the collecting, sorting, and moving of large quantities of materials which are consolidated for pickup. Volunteer will assist with operation of a flat-bed truck lift, and will drive government vehicles as assigned. Volunteer is responsible for obeying all safety and health rules to prevent injury. • Tracking and monitoring recyclable materials on spreadsheet and forms, and provide updates as needed. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required • Knowledge of recycling requirements to collect, sort, and transport to a major collection site. • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy for dealing with numbers and specifications. • Ability to interpret oral & written instructions and complete tasks by following a sequence of directions. • Ability to safely operate light vehicles and equipment. Valid state driver’s license required. • Knowledge of safe methods of lifting and moving heavy items in order to prevent personal injury or injury to coworkers, or damage to trash trucks and/or other containers being moved. • Must be capable of working for short periods of time on tasks requiring heavy exertion. Exerts very heavy physical effort in performing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs. The work requires frequent bending, reaching, lifting, and walking. Opportunity Description: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of the Chihuahuan Desert, an entire mountain range, the Chisos Mountains, and 118 miles of the shared international border along the Rio Grande. Activities include hiking, backpacking, rafting, canoeing, birding, wildlife viewing, and camping. Park elevations range from 1,850 feet at Rio Grande Village to 7,825 feet at Emory Peak. The elevation at Chisos Basin is 5401 feet. Duties: For 32 hours a week : operate visitor information desk, answer questions, write backcountry permits, operate two different cash registers, open and close visitor center independently, a little cleaning. Skills needed: Desire to work with people is necessary. Ability to communicate in a friendly, patient and helpful manner is essential. Experience working with a cash register is helpful. RV site with full hook-ups, propane and uniforms provided. Chisos Basin is in the heart of Big Bend National Park, 10 miles away from Park Headquarters at Panther Junction. The following amenities are available at Chisos Basin: Lodge with restaurant, camper store, Visitor Center, campground. Study Butte is 30 miles away and has a small grocery, and hardware store. Alpine is 95 miles away and has most necessities including: supermarkets, hardware stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, and a university. The nearest large cities are Midland/Odessa at 235 miles and El Paso at 335 miles.
