Opportunity Description:
SPECIAL NOTE: Immediate openings available for maintenance and interpreters! Enjoy amazing scenery and outstanding local recreational opportunities including hiking and backpacking, kayaking, wilderness hot springs, wildlife observation, and outstanding solitude. The 700 year old Gila Cliff Dwellings annually attract 40,000 visitors. Stargazing opportunities are excellent due to dark skies.

The National Monument is located in the beautiful mountains of the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area of southwestern New Mexico. The park includes the Cliff Dwellings, other Mogollon ruins and the multi-agency Gila Visitor center.

The main visitor season is May-October, but year-round staffing is needed. Volunteers are asked to make a 3 month/32 hour a week minimum commitment.

Volunteers will be living and working at an altitude of about 5700'. Since we are open all year and much of the work is outdoors, volunteers will be working in a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures. Working at the Cliff Dwellings requires standing for extended periods of time and hiking a one-mile loop trail that some may consider strenuous. Volunteers are expected to be able to give guided interpretive tours of the cliff dwellings.

INTERPRETATION After training, volunteers provide guided tours of the cliff dwellings and share information about the the area's cultural and natural resources.

VISITOR CENTER STAFF provide wilderness, cliff dwelling, and area information to visitors and sell bookstore items through Western National Parks Association.

MAINTENANCE volunteer opportunities may exist for field and shop work.

CAMPGROUND HOST: There are NO campground host opportunities at Gila Cliff Dwellings NM. <

Due to the remoteness, reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required.

Opportunity Description:
Become a trail steward in beautiful Santa Fe National Forest in northern New Mexico! Adopt a trail or trailhead and provide basic maintanance, signing, and monitoring of that trail or trailhead. The Espanola and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger Districts have a variety of trails and trailheads in need of TLC. Trails/trailheads are located in the Pecos Wilderness and outside of this wilderness, too. Please contact Jennifer Sublett, Trails and Volunteer Coordinator, for more information.

You will be provided with an orientation to your adopted trail or trailhead, plus basic knowledge and training on maintenance and upkeep to get the job done! Typical maintenance includes brushing of overgrown portions, picking up trash, clearing out behind water bars and steps, clearing culverts, and reporting any concerns or hazards to Jennifer (visit your trail at least twice a year). At trailheads you'll remove trash, monitor the signage and add new signage as needed, and report any vandalism or other concerns (visit your trailhead at least once a month)

This is a great opportunity for fun, exercise, meeting new people, bonding as a family, getting kids out on the trail, and/or strenghtening your group's committment to caring for your public lands.

What are you waiting for? Contact Jennifer and join others who have joined forces to make trails and trailheads more sustainable in the Santa Fe National Forest.
