Join refuge staff and volunteers to help clean up the environment and learn how Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge protects, conserves and enhances habitat for fish and wildlife. The day begins with a litter pick-up along the refuge’s Wildlife Drive, then stop under the big tent for lunch served by Friends of Forsythe. Since we are also celebrating National Environmental Education Week, stop by our Watershed Ambassador’s table to better understand the connection between what we do on earth and the impact on the environment. Invasive species are one of the biggest problems Indiana Dunes faces. Each month on the third Saturday from 9:00a.m. to noon, join a ranger to learn about this national park while you volunteer your hand to improve it.

This month the San Diego River park Foundation’s Clean and green team will focus on the part of the river located near Big Rock Road and Mission Gorge in Santee. Volunteer teams have documented trash and debris in the fragile river habitat as a result of illegal dumping and debris from the 52-freeway. Join the community and the team to create a better and cleaner future for our river and our neighborhood. Volunteers will meet in the field next to the Santee Equestrian center at 7980 Mission Gorge Rd Make sure to dress for working outdoors including closed shoes (no sandals please!) a hat and sunscreen are also highly recommended, we will have all tools and supplies. The Friends of Santee’s River Park invite you to help us care for Santee’s premier native plant garden at the historic Edgemoor Polo Barn. All tools and supplies provided. The beautiful Edgemoor barn is Santee’s only registered historic structure and a future museum. Activities consist of light gardening, pruning, watering, garden path maintenance as well as having fun and meeting new people. Dress in gardening clothes, closed shoes required. Hat and sunscreen recommended. This event occurs monthly on the 3rd Saturday of the month. The barn is located at 9111 Magnolia in Santee. Groups and families are encouraged to join us.
