Opportunity Description: Spend your time in beautiful Santa Fe National Forest! The Santa Fe National Forest covers 1.6 million acres in the heart of north central New Mexico. Within the forest borders are lush meadows, miles of conifer trees, and a dormant volcano with a 15-mile wide crater (Valles Caldera National Preserve). Visitors can enjoy camping, fishing, hiking and many other outdoor recreation activities. Residents can maintain their traditional and cultural uses of the national forest and forest products. The highest point in the Santa Fe National Forest is the summit of Truchas Peak located in the Pecos Wilderness 13,103 feet. At the lowest altitude, the SFNF is 6,000 feet. Serving as a campground host(s) involves acting in a professinoal manner to greet campers, help campers find their campsites, relay campground rules, disseminate information on camping and hiking, clean restrooms and fire pits, perform light raking, pick up trash, and conducting similiar duties as needed. The host site now has propane and sewer. Hand pumps are available throughout the campground. No electric is available BUT hosts will be reimbursed for gasoline required for RV generators. Please submit an application through volunteer.gov/gov AND three references. Hosts will work 5 days (weekends included) with 2 days off during the week. A weekly reimbursement of $50/week will be provided to the host/host couple.
Start and ending dates for hosting are an approximation and will depend on the weather and completion of campground renovations. May 1-Nov. 15, 2013.

Opportunity Description: The Espanola Ranger District will be hosting trail workdays on the Dead Dog Trail this Spring! The Dead Dog Trail is undergoing a much-needed re-route to access the mesa in the Caja del Rio, an area just west of Santa Fe. Volunteers will engage in trail projects that include building switchbacks and retaining walls, clearing the trail corridor and digging a new trail. No experience is necessary. Most of these projects will be difficult to strenuous, but if you’re in good shape you should be well-suited for these projects! No experience is necessary, though, so give Jennifer a call or email today to sign up for one or more trail workdays. It’s a great way to give back to the land you love. All volunteers should wear long pants, lightweight long sleeves, leather gloves, above-ankle boots, and eye protection. Everyone will also need a backpack with lunch and at least 3 quarts of water.
