Opportunity Description: 

Time Commitment: Minimum six month commitment, four hours per week

Goal: The goal of the Cactus Garden position to maintain the gardens surrounding the Alan Bible Visitor Center.

Description of Duties: Duties may include but are not limited to:

•Watering plants, trees and shrubs by hose

•Trimming plants, trees and shrubs

•Raking and hauling leave and branches for disposal

•Fixing irrigation lines

•Propagating/transplanting plants, trees and shrubs

•Removing litter/trash from area

Knowledge and Skills desired: Knowledge of and interest in working with native and non-native desert plants.

Physical/Functional Limitations

•Light lifting up to 35 pounds on level ground by ones self

•Light carrying of objects or equipment less than 35 pounds by ones self •No pulling hand over hand for more than 15 minutes without a break

•No pushing over 15 minutes, without a break

•Reaching above shoulder for very short periods, less than 10 minutes

•Walking up to 20 minutes on flat or inclined/declined surface

•No standing for over one hour at a time

•No kneeling for over 15 minutes at a time

Environmental Exposures:

•Excessive heat and cold

•Working with hand tools such as rakes, shovels, shears and saws

•Dry/wet atmospheric conditions

•Excessive/continuous noise

•High winds and dust

Working around machinery with moving parts

•Direct sunlight

•Venomous insects and reptiles maybe encountered at times

•Volunteer must be flexible an able to adjust to change.
