Opportunity Description:

AVAILABILITY OF POSITIONS: Volunteer Maintenance Worker positions are currently available beginning in December, 2013 and beyond. Prospective volunteers with RVs are encouraged to apply since there are ample RV sites available. Dorm rooms for singles are also available. An apartment for couples without an RV may also be available.

NOTES: Please include three references (with phone numbers) in section 19 of the application. References should be unrelated to you and able to speak about your ability and/or aptitude for the position. Also, couples must complete applications for EACH person.

Join a dynamic team of volunteers! Enjoy amazing scenery and outstanding local recreational opportunities including hiking and backpacking, kayaking, wilderness hot springs, wildlife observation, and outstanding solitude. The 700-year-old Gila Cliff Dwellings annually attract 30,000 visitors. Stargazing opportunities are excellent due to dark skies.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located in the beautiful mountains of the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area of southwestern New Mexico. The park includes the Cliff Dwellings, other Mogollon archeological sites, and the multi-agency Gila Visitor Center. Interpretive activities and visitation focus on the architectural remains of the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

The main visitor season is May-October, but year-round staffing is needed. Volunteers are required to make a 3 month/32 hour a week minimum commitment.

Volunteers will be living and working at an altitude of about 5700 feet. Since we are open all year and much of the work is outdoors, volunteers will be working in a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures.

VOLUNTEER MAINTENANCE WORKER: Volunteer maintenance workers assist the US Forsest Service maintenance worker assigned to the area with light maintenance such as painting and assisting with electrical and carpentry repairs, janitorial/custodial work at the visitor center and contact station and adjoining restrooms and campgrounds, monument trail maintenance and repairs, general maintenance of goverment housing and other miscellaneous maintenance projects. Volunteers must have a valid driver's license in order to drive government vehicles.

CAMPGROUND HOST: There are NO campground host opportunities at Gila Cliff Dwellings NM.

Due to the remoteness, reliable personal transportation and a valid drivers license are required.
