Opportunity Description: 

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Visitor Center (August thru September, 2013)

Description: This volunteer position is located at the Cape Hatteras Light Station, in the Hatteras Island Museum and Hatteras Island Visitor Center within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, near Buxton, NC. The Museum and Visitor Center are open year-round. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open from the 3rd Friday in April to Columbus Day.

Duties: Staffs base and top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; provides safety messages to visitors; collects tickets; monitors weather conditions; serves as a tour guide at the top of the lighthouse; orients visitors to attractions and programs within, and outside, the park; answers telephones; answers visitor questions, and; provides one-on-one informational contacts with visitors on park grounds as assigned.

Training and orientation to the site is an ongoing process that will happen in conjunction with uniformed staff members and supervisors.

Physical Requirements: All volunteers working at the lighthouse MUST be physically fit. Volunteers are required to climb the 257 lighthouse spiral steps several times per day, often in hot and humid conditions, to perform duties.

Setting: Buxton, NC is a small village located on Hatteras Island. A small grocery store, bank, and restaurants can all be found within Buxton.

Weather: Summers can be hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor’easter storms. Rarely does Hatteras experience snow or temperatures that drop below freezing.

Transportation: Personal transportation (bike or motorized vehicle) is required as it is several miles to get to local stores outside of the park. There is no public transportation on, or to, the Outer Banks.

Medical Facilities: The local medical center provides basic treatment. The nearest hospital is over one hour away.

Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park may be available, which include electric, water, sewer, and laundry in exchange for commitment of 32 hrs per week for 6 weeks minimum. Housing in the local community is difficult to secure and expensive. If you want to live outside of the park, then you must find your own housing.
