Opportunity Description: 

Volunteer would greet visitors and conduct interpretive guided tours at various sites in the national lakeshore and/or provide outreach to school groups or other organizations.

Duties may include:
  • Presenting interpretive talks, walks, or conducting tours of natural and/or historic sites such as the Lakeshore Trail, Manitou Fish Camp, or Hokenson Brothers Fishery
  • Accompanying Apostle Islands Cruise Service cruises to assist with tours at island locations
  • conducting environmental education programs for school groups
  • Presenting slide programs for school groups or other organizations

Parkwide training and orientation would be provided. Couples applying for this position at Little Sand Bay mainland location may split with a maintenance position (one partner doing maintenance, and other partner working as interpretive guide.) For that location, RV sites and/or shared dormitory accommodations are available. Other duty stations are on islands. These stations may not have running water. Sanitary facilities may consist of an outhouse. A propane heater, a gas-powered refrigerator, and a gas stove for cooking may be available. Volunteers should keep their schedules flexible and always bring extra supplies, in case of weather related transportation delays. Self sufficiency is a must. Minimum of 3 week commitment and 8 hour work days.
