Opportunity Description: The 1891 Scow Schooner Alma Become a member of the sailing crew of the 1891 Scow Schooner Alma. Learn seamanship, sail handling, sailing and navigation on San Francisco Bay, and become a sailing ambassador for San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Woodworking, metalworking, painting, rigging, diesel mechanics and canvas work are essential and are among the required skills to keep the ship sailing. Thursdays and Saturdays are Alma’s primary volunteer days. The sail season is normally April through November – “Official start and finish dates can be adjusted without notice to this website”. Individuals are selected only by the schooner’s First Mate or Captain to join their crew as an Active Volunteer Crewmember. Selected individuals assist not only for the schooner’s sail week; they are also obligated to assist during the schooner’s “maintenance week” as well. The winter months are referred to as Off-Season. The primary focus at that time is totally on ship maintenance and preparations for the following sail season. Although no previous sailing experience is required, some skills are beneficial and essential including a willingness to learn and apply the newly learned seafaring skills while in volunteer service to the schooner. Make Note: Sailing as a passenger aboard the Alma on her alternating weekly excursions on San Francisco Bay is a benefit extended to all maritime park volunteers on a "First Come, First Serve & Space Available Basis”. Vehicle Operation: If you are asked to operate a government vehicle, yours or another privately owned vehicle during your volunteer service time, it is mandatory that you submit evidence of your driver’s license to the schooner's First Mate or Captain prior to operating said vehicle. It is also mandatory that the license you hold is valid and legal by the state in which it was issued and that you operate only vehicles which you are certified for. While you are in the operation of a government vehicle, your personal vehicle, or a vehicle that belongs to another person, ALL individuals are forbidden to use a hand held cell phone or to do text messaging (Except for Extreme Emergencies).
Failure to comply with this regulation could deactivate your status as an Active Maritime Volunteer.
