Opportunity Description:
Every winter, Mount Rainier National Park works with the Washington Ski Touring Club to provide assistance with wilderness patrol and visitor services. Nordic Ski volunteers work independently or with NPS Rangers during weekends throughout the winter use season and, as available, during the Christmas holiday period.

Nordic Ski volunteers perform day or overnight patrols of routes primarily in the Paradise area. Occasional trips may be scheduled for other destinations, such as up the West Side Road. Patrols center around visitor contacts with emphasis on providing information to skiers, snowshoers, snowboarders, and winter campers; preventative Search and Rescue; avalanche safety; and resource protection (i.e. minimum impact winter camping and compliance with park regulations).

Nordic Ski volunteers place and maintain ski trail signs and markers on selected ski trails in the Paradise area. Depending on individual expertise, volunteers monitor snow pit avalanche data collection points and will dig and analyze hasty pits in areas of patrol. As needed, volunteers monitor group winter camping activities in the immediate Paradise area as well as check other parties camped in more remote backcountry areas. Nordic Ski volunteers are issued NPS radios and serve as a communication link in reporting ski and avalanche conditions, backcountry emergencies, and potential violations of park regulations (e.g. dog in the backcountry). Within their level of training and certification, volunteers assist Rangers and other rescue personnel on medical and SAR emergencies. Volunteers complete a brief daily report which summarizes events of each days’ activities.

Most winters, housing is available on weekends for Ski Patrol members who wish to volunteer for several days running.

For more information, visit the website of the Washington Ski Touring Club. Mount Rainier National Park does not hire individuals to serve as ski patrol members, but works entirely through the Ski Touring Club.
