Opportunity Description:

Mount Rainier's maintenance and cultural resources programs are looking for several dedicated individuals to form a Historic Landscape Restoration Team this summer, beginning the long-neglected task of restoring rock walls and other landscape structures originally built by WPA crews in the 1920s. These beautiful stone masonry structures are part of the park's National Historic Landmark District, but have been slowly crumbling under the effects of weather, moss, and invasive roots. Restoring them properly, in a way that preserves their historic character, is slow and detail-oriented but highly rewarding work, a project that will likely last several years but will result in the preservation of one of Mount Rainier's most important cultural resources.

Qualifications: Applicants must be physically fit and capable of working safely with hand tools in remote outdoor locations. A background in construction or other maintenace work is helpful but not required, as training will be provided. Training will also be available in wilderness first aid. Tools and safety equipment will be provided.

Schedule: The Restoration Team will be trained and supervised by members of Mount Rainier's backcountry maintenance staff, who will work with team members to develop a schedule of projects over the course of the summer. The initial work will be closely supervised, but as your skills develop, you will have increasing opportunities to work independently on your own schedule. You will be expected to complete a day of training at the beginning of the season, and to participate in field projects at least once a month over the course of the summer, from June through October. Free camping is available for volunteers who work multiple days at a stretch.
