Commitment: End of May through Labor Day
Grand Portage National Monument seeks volunteers for our living history site who are outgoing, friendly, and active. Must be able to work with an attention to detail and a willingness to follow Park procedures. Join our team that loves where they are and what they do! If you have a desire to learn and try new things, study history, wear 18th century period clothing (provided), and pass on what you know, this is how you should spend your summer! At Grand Portage, you are an integral part of the park staff and the Grand Portage community; you will have the opportunity to get to know the park site intimately. Living history interpreters communicate the story of Grand Portage through demonstrations, formal programs, and informal visitor contacts. Before you arrive, you will receive our famous "Box of Books," the travelling library includes books and studies of Grand Portage, the fur trade, and Native American histories to study-up on this winter. Your typical three day work week may include a day interpreting a voyageur’s life, another mending a fish net in the Ojibwe Village, or a third demonstrating historic cooking in the Kitchen. Grand Portage National Monument is located in the northeastern tip of Minnesota; our borders are Lake Superior, Canada, and the Superior National Forest. The Park lies completely within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation and is a partner with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. A number of outdoor recreational opportunities will keep you busy on your four consecutive days off, bring your kayak and explore the pristine Suzie Islands, hike the 8.5 mile historic Grand Portage Trail, gear up for canoeing on one of our many lakes, or just relax by Lake Superior. Our volunteers contribute three eight-hour days per week. Your adventure will begin at the end of May with two weeks of comprehensive training and shadowing. We ask for a commitment through Labor Day, or beyond if you like. In exchange we offer trailer pad parking, full electric, water/sewer hook-ups, and free laundry facilities.
