Need volunteers willing to open our local national wildlife refuge to the public from 9am to 3pm one or two days each month on Saturday or Sunday. Moapa Valley NWR seeks volunteers available to open a small national wildlife refuge to the public on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and an occasional weekday. As the resident host you provide orientation, interpretation and answer visitor questions. You would cover topics regarding the refuge, local natural and cultural resources, safety precautions, rules and regulations, recreational opportunities, and area services. Training provided. RV or motor home utility hook-ups for electric, water, propane, and sewage available for a minimum time commitment of 4 months. Opportunity Description: Volunteer needed to aid the Refuge admin staff and perform visitor services. Activities: Volunteer will assist as a receptionist at the Refuge office. This duty involves greeting visitors, answering the phone, and light clerical duties that includes mailing, filing, photocopying, responding to leaflet requests, light typing, light office cleaning, operating a cash register and other clerical duties as needed. Qualifications: Ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision. Computer skills preferred. Refuge volunteer vest or shirt will be provided. Time commitment: 4 hours, 2 or 3 days a week. Schedule will be coordinated to match time available by the volunteer with specific needs at the Refuge such as high visitation periods or special projects. Opportunity Description: Duties: Volunteer will be assigned light maintenance tasks primarily at the refuge shop which may include sign repair, vehicle washing/waxing, sweeping floors, trash removal, painting and carpentry depending on the skills of the volunteer. Volunteers may also be involved in field projects such as sign installation, kiosk staining or small construction or rehabilitation projects. Prerequisites: Reliability. Our volunteer will help visitors learn about the Refuge resources, the general wildlife present and other wildlife viewing opportunities. The applicant must be able to demonstrate public speaking and interpretation skills. A background or interest in conservation, natural history, ecology or biology is helpful. Knowledge of and ability to identify local birds is key. Special interests in birding, tracking, teaching, or storytelling is preferred. Minimum time commitment is 2 - 3 hours at the refuge per month - usually on a Saturday. A 6 hour availability is preferred. Monthly scheduling is flexible. Orientation provided and some interpretive skill training is available.

Cutting/removal/mowing of vegetation and maintenance of associated sprinkler system. Construction/maintenance of various fences. Repair/replacement/installation of directional, informational and interpretive signs. Perform on automotive and heavy equipment preventative maintenance checks, parts and wiring inspection and replacement, complete routine maintenance. Tasks may also involve metal work, cutting and welding. Special projects, as assigned, including but not limited to stream restoration, re-vegetation projects, dam and dike removal, maintain/clean irrigation ditches and building up road base. May perform a variety of other duties. CDL desirable, but not required. Open and close small Visitor Center including: stocking supplies in gift shop. Operate and manage cash registers and credit card machine, balance daily register and credit card tills. Greet visitors and provide helpful and accurate information and materials. Being as Ash Meadows NWR is about an hour distant from Pahrump, the refuge is considered a remote location. There are no paved roads on the refuge.

Refuge Headquarters, visitor entry kiosk and RV pads are located at Corn Creek Station. Corn Creek Station is off US95 at the end of about a 4 mile gravel road.

Opportunity Description: Job Description:Assist with care of all landscaping within Visitor Center complex. Remove invasive species and care for existing, native plant life. Assist with approved seed collection and plant propagation program. Provide information to Red Rock Canyon visitors on an as-needed basis. Will work in close cooperation with University of Nevada – Master Gardeners. Qualifications:Knowledge of Mojave Desert native plants. Ability to work and communicate with a diverse group of people.
