Opportunity Description: Residential volunteers are welcomed from April through October with a work requirement of 24 hours per week per unit. Non-residential volunteers can work practically year round! Needs include operating the visitor contact station during weekends, providing birding/wildlife tours, wildlife interpretation, environmental education, noxious weed mapping and control, tree removal, seed collecting, lawn care, habitat management, and boundary signing. Bring your skills and enthusiasm for an action-packed experience! Training will be provided, as necessary, for the operation of equipment. South Dakota’s interior continental climate exhibits an extreme range of temperatures between summer and winter, common high winds, and cyclic wet/dry periods. Temperatures range from an average high of 83 degrees in July to 2 degrees in January. The number of sunny days averages 210. Average annual rainfall is 22.9 inches while annual snowfall averages 33.4 inches.
Madison (pop. 6,319) is the seat of Lake County, nestled amongst several prairie lakes. From Sioux Falls (I-90), travel 26 miles north on I-29, then west 20 miles on Hwy. 34. A wide variety of businesses amply provide for comfortable living conditions. Any other consumer needs are available in Sioux Falls, 40 minutes away.
Opportunity Description: Camp Host:. Cold Brook and Cottonwood Springs are small recreation areas with spring-fed lakes nestled in the beautiful Black Hills, near Hot Springs, SD. Cold Brook Lake has a 13-unit campground and Cottonwood has an 18-unit campground (neither campground has utility hook-ups for campers). Both lakes offer fishing and non-motorized boating with boat ramps, picnic areas, playgrounds (Cold Brook also has a nice beach), and hiking trails, wildlife viewing and bird watching. Volunteer Duties: Greet visitors and provide hospitality, directions and information to campground guests. Hosts provide on-site presence and security monitoring. They offer assistance to visitors at campground and day-use areas, and help in the upkeep of facilities and grounds, including light cleaning and re-stocking of restrooms, litter pick-up and trash removal, minor maintenance and repairs. Hosts instruct visitors on camping fees and self-pay guidelines. Camp Hosts help promote safe, responsible use of Corps properties, including regulation compliance and providing interface with Rangers and local Law Enforcement as need arises.
Special Skills: Campground Hosts should have skills in visitor contact and public relations, along with a desire to meet and interact with persons from varied backgrounds. Hosts need good verbal communication skills and the ability to answer questions, along with a positive attitude, ability to get along with people and a good work ethic. Appearance of the Host should be neat and offer a positive reflection on the organization; Volunteer apparel is provided and is expected to be worn while on duty for identification purposes. Hosts should have the physical ability to navigate the camp loop and visit campsites, pick up trash and light cleaning. Hosts will keep a daily log of hours worked and duties accomplished. A personal vehicle is necessary to get into Hot Springs for groceries and other personal needs.

Opportunity Description: Campground Host: Tail Race Left Recreation Area: Opportunity description: The Big Bend Project is looking for two couples to fill the position of campground host. Schedule is twenty hours per week, working Thursday through Monday with Tuesday and Wednesday as scheduled days off. Work is to be conducted between the hours of 8:00am and 10:00 pm. DUTIES: Park surveillance, conduct facility and maintenance inspections, loan recreation equipment to visitors, provide information on the Corps to visiting public, update bulletin boards, shoreline and park cleanup, and light maintenance activities. Volunteers will live on-site and be available to answer questions, provide directions, and other assistance. Volunteers must provide a safe, licensed, and insured camping unit and vehicle. SKILLS: Need suitable skills to accomplish all of the duties above. Computer literate, positive attitude, good work ethic and an ability to get along with people is essential. Volunteers must also be able to read, write, add and subtract, and keep a daily log of accomplishments and hours worked. COMPENSATION: Volunteers provide their own self contained motor home or camping trailer. A personal vehicle that can run separately from the camping unit is most convenient. There are two shower buildings and potable water spigots within the park boundaries. The Left Tailrace campground has 81 electric sites that all come with picnic tables, shade awnings and fire rings. There is a sewer dump station located between the Lower Brule and Crow Creek Reservations and directly adjacent to the park boundary.
AREA: The Left Tailrace Campground is located along the Missouri River below Lake Sharpe and the Big Bend Dam and Powerhouse. There are 25 developed recreation areas located around Lake Sharpe encompassing 80,000 acres of public lands available for exploration.

Opportunity Description: Visitor Information Assistant: As a member of the Visitor Information Staff, the volunteer serves as a Visitor Information Assistant for the Black Hills National Forest's Pactola Visitor Center. The center is located on Pactola Lake, which is the largest reservoir in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The center is accessible via US Highway 385, 11 miles north of Hill City, South Dakota and is south from Lead and Deadwood, or via the Rimrock Highway, SD Highway 44 from Rapid City. The center is a popular stopping place every year for thousands of visitors to the Black Hills. Many visitors stop by to take in the spectacular view of the lake during their visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial or while enjoying the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Description: Visitor Information assistants will staff the visitor center, greet visitors, answers questions, sell merchandise, maintain administrative records and use data, and assist with special projects and routine cleaning of the Center. Computer skills helpful. This position, although operating under the Visitor Services team, functions independently. Responsible for providing written and oral (over the counter and phone) information to the public. Applicants must be in good physical condition, have dependable transportation, have good communication and organizational skills, a helpful attitude, and the ability to work well with others. Volunteers will be provided with training, uniform apparel, nametags and all needed equipment and supplies. Schedule: Each Volunteer is needed Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend (dates flexible) and are asked to provide 24-32 hours of volunteer service per week.

Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives in Spearfish, South Dakota has a very large and diverse volunteer program (over 14,000 hours donated annually). Although volunteer opportunities abound, our most popular opportunity is for visiting volunteers (RVers). Visiting volunteers are welcome from April through October. In exchange for 15-24 hour/week/person, volunteers are given a premium RV site in the Spearfish City Campground (right across from the hatchery) with full hookups, cable TV, and high-speed wireless internet. Volunteers generally work a 3-days-on 3-days-off schedule with 5-6 hour shifts. Volunteers work primarily in the gift shop and giving tours of the historic Booth house (1905), museum, and restored fisheries railcar. Staffing-permitted, visiting volunteers also have the opportunity to complete office and light maintenance work (if interests and skills allow.) D.C. Booth has the ability to accommodate 10 volunteer couples throughout the volunteer season. Singles are also encouraged to apply. Opportunity Description: Resource management volunteers will assist the National Park Service (NPS) with surface and/or subsurface management projects for Jewel Cave National Monument (JECA). Work projects may involve, but are not limited to, the following assignments: Cave Exploration - mapping, and inventorying undeveloped portions of Jewel Cave; climb, scramble, and crawl over uneven, loose, and/or slippery rock surfaces. NOTE: Prior caving experience is required. All required work equipment (survey book and paper, pencils, markers, protractor, laser distance meter or measuring tape, digital camera, compass, clinometer, and inventory data book) is provided by Jewel Cave National Monument. Required personal gear*: UIAA-approved helmet, Three independent sources of light, Side-mounted caving pack (larger packs are permitted for overnight trips), Gloves, Knee and elbow pads, Ankle-high, rubber-soled boots, Food and water, Appropriate clothing Cave Restoration - removing lint and wax from cave, repairing cave formations, and/or other cave restoration activities on established cave tour routes; bending, stooping, and carrying up to 30 pounds. Opportunity Description: Visitor center host volunteers during the summer season (Early May - Early September) will assist the National Park Service (NPS) through front-line visitor services, interpretive programming, fee collection, and other educational duties as assigned within the Interpretive Division. Work assignments may involve large groups of people, with hectic and (sometimes) stressful working conditions during the holidays, weekends, and while hosting (late spring season) school groups. Individuals may be asked to participate in several specific work projects that involve, but are not limited to, the following assignments: Cash Register Operation - operating a cash register and credit card machine for bookstore sales. Cooperative Association Assistance - restocking of bookstore items and related products, as well as conducting an inventory of supplies for future ordering purposes. Visitor Center Information and Desk Duty - answering questions pertaining to visitor center (and surrounding area) orientation, (“Where’s the restroom?” “Are there vending machines?” “Where does the tour meet?” “How far is it to the town of Custer?”), while also distributing applicable brochures, educational handouts, program flyers, and cave tour promotional material. Light Cleaning - assist in light cleaning duties within visitor facilities (ie: wipe down counter tops, straighten merchandise in bookstore, run vacuum cleaner). Assist Interpretive Staff - assisting with program set-up and tear-down, serving as an “assistant” chaperone with large school groups, and working as a “gopher” during educational workshops and/or other special events. Special Event Programming - serve as a potential interpretive park guide in relation to special activities, such as Junior Ranger Days, Cub Scout Belt Loopalooza, star gazing nights, and other date-specific educational events. Library Research - utilizing reference library materials and online search sites for completing projects as assigned. Office Duties - filing agency records, copying resource materials, entering data, folding and collating brochures, and other administrative assignments as needed. Fee Collection - using a point-of-sale (POS) computer system for selling cave tour tickets and associated NPS Passes. NOTE: Please refer to the Additional Information section within the position description for more details. Cave Tour Guide - having the knowledge and interpretive skills to perform as an interpretive park guide when needed. NOTE: Visitor center host volunteers that work within the fee collection program at the Monument will be required to have a full background investigation conducted, as well as be insured through a surety bond, prior to handling any government funds or operating the Point of Sales System. The background investigation and surety bond fees will be paid by the Monument, after a successful screening of the volunteer applicant. These requirements are aligned with Reference Manual #22 - Recreation Fees, Chapter 6.
Opportunity Description: Grounds maintenance volunteers will assist the National Park Service (NPS) in the painting of structures, mowing of lawns, brush clearing of trails, pine needle and leaf raking from picnic grounds, and/or fence post installation and/or removal from visitor use areas within Jewel Cave National Monument (JECA). The work may consist of hands-on labor, with associated mechanical equipment as deemed necessary by the VIP Work Coordinator. Specific work projects may involve, but are not limited to, the following assignments: Painting - painting of buildings and structures, fences, roadway posts, roadway signs, picnic tables, retaining walls, and/or other objects. Light Raking - pine needle and leaf removal from facility lawns and/or various visitor use areas. Bagging Leaves and/or Pine Needles - collecting and storing ground litter materials, for proper disposal and/or recycling. Sidewalk Maintenance - sweep, brush, and/or blow sidewalk areas of surface debris. Mowing - mow picnic locations, visitor use areas, and trail corridors. Grounds Labor - dig and move dirt by hand or shovel; cut and chop tree roots and stumps with axes and picks; loosen and remove rocks from trail; move sand, small rocks, and dirt with hand pails or buckets; use leaf blower to remove ground debris from trail. Clean Up - pick up litter and other unsightly debris from facility lawns, visitor use areas, and/or along Monument roadways. NOTE: Grounds maintenance volunteers may be requested to lift and carry heavy objects for short distances. All lifting and carrying assignments must be reasonable and accommodating to the individual volunteer. NOTE: Grounds maintenance volunteers, 18 years of age and older with a valid driver’s license, may drive NPS cars and light pick-up trucks. Volunteers, 18 years of age and older, may drive all-terrain vehicles after successfully completing an on-site training.
