Opportunity Description: 

Volunteer would greet visitors and conduct interpretive guided tours at various sites in the national lakeshore and/or provide outreach to school groups or other organizations.

Duties may include:
  • Presenting interpretive talks, walks, or conducting tours of natural and/or historic sites such as the Lakeshore Trail, Manitou Fish Camp, or Hokenson Brothers Fishery
  • Accompanying Apostle Islands Cruise Service cruises to assist with tours at island locations
  • conducting environmental education programs for school groups
  • Presenting slide programs for school groups or other organizations

Parkwide training and orientation would be provided. Couples applying for this position at Little Sand Bay mainland location may split with a maintenance position (one partner doing maintenance, and other partner working as interpretive guide.) For that location, RV sites and/or shared dormitory accommodations are available. Other duty stations are on islands. These stations may not have running water. Sanitary facilities may consist of an outhouse. A propane heater, a gas-powered refrigerator, and a gas stove for cooking may be available. Volunteers should keep their schedules flexible and always bring extra supplies, in case of weather related transportation delays. Self sufficiency is a must. Minimum of 3 week commitment and 8 hour work days.

Opportunity Description: 

Volunteer Duties:
  • Greet visitors and conduct interpretive guided tours of the light stations
  • Hike island trails and perform light trailwork and tree litter pickup
  • Notify supervisor when hazardous conditions exist or submit work orders for routine maintenance needs
  • Administer first aid to self and visitors
  • Provide on-site presence to prevent vandalism of historic structures
  • Mow lawns and perform routine grounds maintenance
  • Perform light housekeeping including sweeping, washing windows, etc.
  • Assist Historic Structures Preservation maintenance workers with planned maintenance projects;
  • Clean and disinfect vault toilets, replenish supplies and notify supervisor when vault needs to be pumped
  • Maintain visitation records; and monitor visitor activities for infractions of lakeshore regulations

Parkwide orientation and training would be provided. Volunteers must be prepared to live, for weeks at a time, at remote Apostle Islands light stations and must be prepared for isolation. Depending on the light station, it may be necessary to occasionally carry gear as much as one mile to or from a landing site on the island. Stations may not have running water. Wash water is drawn from the lake, and drinking water must be brought from the mainland. Sanitary facilities may consist of an outhouse. A propane heater, a gas-powered refrigerator, and a gas stove for cooking may be available. Volunteers should keep their schedules flexible and always bring extra supplies, in case of weather related transportation delays. Self sufficiency is a must. Minimum of 3 week commitment of daily work, and 8 hour work days.

Opportunity Description: 

Lynch Creek is our Watchable Nature Watch Site providing wetland birding and mammal observations such as olive-sided flycatcher, the winter wren, long tailed weasel and the otter are just a few of the critters that reside in the area. A colorful brochure "The Birds of Lnych Creek" and a CD featuring the bird songs and calls are are free publications available to the public.

Two easy hiking trails access the area. The trail on the north side of the flowage is a quarter mile in length and ends at a viewing platform that will need light brushing around the perimeter. The south trail is one mile in length and will need light brushing and weed whacking. The trail ends near an old beaver damn overlooking the entire flowage to the west and the creek. to the east. Waterfowl are plentiful as well as bald eagles and ospreys that visit the area.

Opportunity Description: 

Maintain the trail by brushing, removing down branches and checking on trail signs.

In the summer, the east loop is an excellent nature trail. An interpretive booklet provides great information on where to see and hear wildlife along this trail. Trail Length: East Loop - 1 mile or 1.7 Km

The east loop is the only loop that can be hiked in the summer. Wetlands on the north and south loops prevent hiking. The trail is fairly flat.

Opportunity Description: 

Black Lake Trail provides scenic views of the lake through picturesque white pines, hemlocks and northern hardwoods. In the summer our bird population more than doubles with the return of our neo-tropical migrants. Black Lake is in a wilderness like setting with no development other than a small 30 site campground all in Forest Service ownership. Loons, ducks, bald eagles, ospreys, black bear, wolves, otters, fishers white tail deer, and elk are found through out the area. Wildlife viewings opportunities are plentiful while maintaining the trail with hand tools to remove down branches, brushing and checking on signing. The trail has a self-guiding interpretive booklet, focusing on key historic aspects of the area.
