This position is ideal for an individual or couple that are capable of performing moderately difficult hands-on tasks in hot and buggy conditions.
Major Duties: Assists maintenance workers in the performance of their duties. Performs shop housekeeping such as cleaning tools, machines and equipment. Volunteer will occasionally work from a 26 foot maintenance barge operating in the Ten Thousand Island area of Southwest Florida. Duties will include operation of pumps and dock/campsite maintenance. Additional duties include digging holes; and performing custodial duties at various facilities and sites. VIP performs Power washing and painting. Safely operates commercial riding mowers, self-propelled push mowers and brush mowers. Incumbent loads and unloads conveyances; moves, packs, stacks, and arranges various items.
Volunteers are provided training for their duties, and issued a National Park Service volunteer uniform shirt and Tshirt. All necessary tools and equipment for performing duties are provided by the park. An RV site with full hook-ups will be provided for this position.
Area Information: The Gulf Coast (Everglades City) District is located in Everglades City, Florida and offers easy access to fishing, birding, wildlife photography, canoeing, boating and other outdoor activities. Everglades City is a small fishing, tourism and retirement community - population 400-600 with grocery store and school (K-12 available). Apartment an single family home rentals are very limited. Naples and Marco Island are 30 to 35 miles west and offer all amenities of moderately sized cities (100,000+ population). The Miami metro area is located 70 miles east and has all of the amenities of a major urban area. Climate is subtropical with mild pleasant winters. Biting insects are prevalent, varying in degree with the seasons. We have full hookup 25 amp RV sites located 6 miles west of the Tamiami Ranger Station at the Trail Center.

Conditions of Employment: If Volunteer is properly licensed, they will occasionally operate a government vehicle. Volunteer will be required to assist crafts-persons in making repairs from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; Volunteer will stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Must frequently lift, carry and move objects weighing over 40 pounds. Work is performed both inside and outside with frequent noise from hammers, saws, and other power equipment. Inside work areas may be dusty, dirty, and greasy. Outside work areas offer exposure to poisonous snakes, insects, alligators and poisonous plants. Incumbent will be required to wear a VIP uniform.
