Pipe Spring National Monument preserves 40 acres surrounding a natural spring and 1870 stone fort in the high desert of Arizona. Now surrounded by the Kaibab Paiute reservation, this area was a tithing ranch for the Mormon Church from 1870 to 1890. The park is located on the Utah/Arizona border, north of the Grand Canyon along AZ state road 389. For more information on the park please visit our website at www.nps.gov/pisp.
POSITIONS AVAILABLE: Multiple positions available September 15 through May 31 with a minimun commitment of 12 weeks.
DUTIES: Applicants will be trained to staff the information desk, collect entrance fees, provide informal interpretation, present tours of the historic stone fort (30 minutes in length each), and cleaning the interior of the historic house. Assist with special holiday event in December. As time allows work may include special interpretive projects, talks or demonstration, library or grounds work. Volunteer initiates visitor contacts, provides information covering the primary and secondary themes of the park. Subjects covered in the park are varied and include: Kaibab Paiute occupation and culture, Mormon occupation, culture and land use. May dress in period clothing (provided) representing the 1870s and 1880s.
SKILLS DESIRED: Good communication skills are essential along with an ability to learn about area history and enjoy sharing knowledge with others. Incumbent must be able to develop a working knowledge of the stories of Pipe Spring and learn interpretive techniques to present those stories to visitors. Ability to speak easily to the public one-on-one or to groups of up to 15 people. Volunteers must have a willingness to work and get along with a diverse variety of co-workers and visitors and be able to deal with the public in an enthusiastic and positive manner. Volunters must demonstrate an ability to work in an organized, dependable, and safe manner. A genuine desire to insure that each visitor has an enjoyable experience at Pipe Spring is essential. Incumbent must be flexible enough to handle variations of routine caused by shifting priorities and visitor needs.
