Cold Brook offers fishing and non-motorized boating with boat ramp, picnic areas, playgrounds, a nice beach, hiking trails, wildlife viewing and bird watching. There is also a Field Archery Range and a non-motorized, walk-in Wildlife Area at Cold Brook.
Volunteer Duties: Greet visitors and provide hospitality, directions and information to campground guests. Hosts provide on-site presence and security monitoring. Hosts offer assistance to visitors at campground and day-use areas, and help in the upkeep of facilities and grounds, including light cleaning and re-stocking of restrooms, litter pick-up and trash removal, minor maintenance and repairs. Hosts instruct visitors on camping fees and self-pay guidelines. Camp Hosts help promote safe, responsible use of Corps properties, including regulation compliance and providing interface with Rangers and local Law Enforcement as need arises.
Special Skills: Campground Hosts should have skills in visitor contact and public relations, along with a desire to meet and interact with persons from varied backgrounds. Hosts need good verbal communication skills and the ability to answer questions, along with a positive attitude, ability to get along with people and a good work ethic. Appearance of the Host should be neat and offer a positive reflection on the organization; Volunteer apparel is provided and is expected to be worn while on duty for identification purposes. Hosts should have the physical ability to navigate the camp loop and visit campsites, pick up trash and light cleaning. Hosts will keep a daily log of hours worked and duties accomplished.
A personal vehicle is helpful to get into Hot Springs (one mile away) for groceries, entertainment, and other personal needs. Camp Hosts are provided a free campsite with water and electric hook-ups, along with the tools required for work projects. There is a sewer dump at the vault toilet within close proximity to the Host site. (Updated 08/25/2014)
HOUSING & AMENITIES Description: Cold Brook Lake is a small recreation area with a clear, spring-fed lake, nestled in the beautiful Black Hills, near Hot Springs; SD. Cold Brook has a 13-unit campground but has no utility hook-ups for campers, although Camp Hosts are provided with water and electric hook-ups and a dump vault within 50 feet of the Host campsite.
