The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is one of the largest urban national parks in the world. The total park area is more than 80,000 acres of land and water. Approximately 28 miles of coastline lie within its boundaries. It is nearly two and one-half times the size of San Francisco. One of the nation's most highly visited National Park Service units, the GGNRA is comprised of numerous sites, including Alcatraz, Marin Headlands, Nike Missile Site, Fort Mason, as well as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, and the Presidio of San Francisco. Each has its own unique natural, cultural, and military history.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is seeking a Volunteer Social Media Strategist for the Division of Interpretation and Education. The individual will be responsible for working as a team player in collaboration with other divisions and possibly park partners in helping showcase various park related events, ranger programs, and/or driving issues within the park.
The ideal candidates for this position are individuals that will play a major role in the park's social media outreach and marketing strategy. Duties include:
Writing new content for the park's Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, and/or other accounts to promote the park’s programs
Assist in the creation of Smore fliers to generate interest in park programs
Take an active role in interacting with park visitors and other interested parties who contact us through our social media outlets
Researching and reporting on new social media trends and services.
Finding and cultivating social media contacts to spread the word about park activities past, present, and future.
Researching target markets to promote programs
Volunteers must also possess good customer service skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with cross-functional teams.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS DESIRED
Excellent written and verbal communication, strong editing skills
Ability to develop a detailed and professional marketing plan
Knowledge of social media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, blogs, etc.
Passionate about Social Media (interested in doing it for yourself too!)
Energy, with a desire to come up with fresh ideas on how to grow our online presence
Ability to identify a target market and “speak” to that park visitor through social media
Ability to deal with uncertainty
Ability to contribute individually and participate in cross-functional teams as well as with diverse audiences.
Must be detail oriented, team player and technologically savvy
Cross platform user
Must represent the highest standards of professional behavior including dress, punctuality, client contacts and interpersonal relationships.
Must be creative, innovative, and understand how to develop their compositions to meet their targeted audiences.
Be willing to participating in critique process.
Experience and enjoy working with people.
Exposure to regional, national, and international issues and leaders.

Volunteers will have opportunities to access behind the scene locations in the park like Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Fort Point
Interns will gain understanding about working with nonprofit and government agencies, such as the National Park Service.
Training in Interpretation, CPR and First Aid

Estimated 8-16 hours per week, ideally spread out over three or four days if needed; unless you have more time to volunteer (schedule can be flexible). The intern should be willing to Twitter/Facebook multiple times a day. The position lasts three months, after which time there may be an opportunity for renewal.
