The Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), encompasses 12,000 acres of open space, extending from the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Beach. Renowned for its geological features, the Marin Headlands also provides habitat for diverse plants and animals including several endangered species, and contains significant other cultural resources such as the former Nike Missile Site SF-88, the remains of more than two dozen former military gun emplacements and associated structures such as Battery Townsley, and the Point Bonita Lighthouse.
Activities of the Marin Headlands Visitor Center Volunteer are classified as primarily “interpretive” – public orientation and resource education. The Visitor Center Volunteer is part of the Marin Headlands volunteer and internship program, administered by the National Park Service, GGNRA, at the Marin Headlands. The volunteer is required to wear the approved National Park Service volunteer uniform.
Description of Duties
The Visitor Center Volunteer staffs the Marin Headlands Visitor Center and maintains its day-to-day operations. The volunteer will maintain the visitor center in a clean, neat, and organized state. The volunteer will maintain and accurately and effectively share with the public their knowledge of general park procedures, regulations and policies, Marin Headlands site locations, campground policies and current events. The volunteer will be expected to answer the phones and greet walk-in visitors in a friendly and courteous manner, and to operate a park communications radio. Campground and program reservations and permits will be recorded thoroughly and accurately. The volunteer will also maintain and stock brochures and maps, the hot beverage area, and will assist with project work on occasion.

Volunteers receive training in National Park Service mission, policies, and visitor center operations. Volunteers can receive training in CPR, First Aid, Interpretation, and gain experience communicating with people (both public and staff) of diverse cultures and interests.
The main goal of the volunteer is to provide cultural and natural site resource information to the public in a courteous manner. This in turn increases public awareness of the resources, and fosters a public sense of stewardship in preserving the resources for present and future generations.

Knowledge of Bay Area locations and attractions helpful, as well as park resources such as flora, fauna, geology, lighthouses, and military history
