Campground hosts are needed for the Newhalem Creek Campground in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex during the 2014 summer season.
Area Description: Newhalem Creek Campground is second-largest of four developed car campgrounds in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area with approximately 120 sites situated at the confluence of Newhalem Creek and the Skagit River near the North Cascades Visitor Center. Access is from State Route 20 approximately one mile prior to the historic company town of Newhalem. This is one of the busiest parts of North Cascades National Park Service Complex though many areas of the campground are secluded by dense second-growth forest. Mountain views are limited by the canyon of the Skagit River and forest cover.
The nearest town with full amenities (groceries, shopping, banking, etc.) is Concrete approximately 35 miles to the west. Limited groceries and dining are available in Newhalem (~1 mile to the east) and gasoline in Marblemount (~15 miles to the west). Cell service is available in Newhalem but absent elsewhere in the park.
Work five 8-hour days per week at the campground.
Greet and welcome a constantly changing group of campers.
Provide information and aid to campers and visitors to enhance their stay in the North Cascades.
Assist Campground Rangers to assure visitor compliance with fees and regulations.
Keep campground visitor statistics.
Benefits to the volunteer:
Gain personal enrichment and professional experience working and living in a national park.
Receive interpretive training, as well as training and education about the North Cascades and related park resources.
Enjoy the experience of communicating with and helping national park visitors appreciate and protect their park resources.
Qualifications Volunteers should have an outgoing personality, the ability to meet and greet the public with a friendly and helpful demeanor, and be willing to live in an area where crowds, and isolation, comes and goes.
