John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) has three types of volunteer positions. Interpretive docents answer visitor questions and present interpretive / educational programs at the John Muir House about John Muir, the NHS, and the NPS in general. We request that applicants for these volunteer positions commit to a minimum 1 year agreement due to the amount of training involved. Community service applicants are NOT eligible for these volunteer positions.
Garden volunteers will perform manual labor in the park’s fruit/nut orchards and in the Mt. Wanda open space area. The duties will include removal of alien plant species, planting of native plants and grasses, picking ripe fruits/nuts, watering flowers, pruning trees limbs, and taking them to the composting area. As well as learning opportunities while working with the Park biologist, Horticulturalist, California native plant folks and UC Davis Master gardeners. All Volunteers with back, heart, allergies or other medical conditions are advised that this is physically demanding work in the outdoors.
Information Desk docents greet visitors, orient them to the park facilities, answer visitors in person and on the phone and operate the Cash register for bookstore sales .
