Job Title: Volunteer River Rover, Foothills
Please note, this position does not provide housing and candidates need to live within commuting distance of the Three Rivers area to be considered.
Supervisor: Foothills Interpretive Ranger
Goal: To promote river safety and help visitors enjoy the natural wonders of Sequoia National Park.
Spend time at the river, talking to visitors at trailheads and parking lots, or walking several miles on uneven terrain.
Provide information to visitors on river hazards and safe enjoyment of the park.
Initiate contact with park visitors to answer questions.
Provide information to visitors on recreational opportunities in the park, including evening campfire programs and other programs.
Encourage park stewardship by collecting litter found along the trails and handing out trash bags to visitors.
Keep count of visitor contacts and inform supervisor of patterns of visitor use or any unusual conditions observed.
Notify park dispatch immediately by radio in case of any emergency.
Notify park dispatch by radio if any illegal or improper activity is observed.
Ability to work independently.
Good communication skills, including good listening skills.
Ability to relate to adults and young people of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to work outdoors in high temperatures.
Knowledge of languages other than English, including Hmong and Spanish, desirable.

Training: River rovers receive orientation and training in river safety, radio communication, park history and operations, job safety and communicating effectively with the public.
