Job Title: Volunteer Campground Hosts, Grant Grove
Supervisor: Grant Grove Campground Supervisor
Goal: To provide a quality camping experience for park visitors by assisting with campground operations for two large campgrounds, Sunset and Azalea,and one medium size campground, Crystal Springs.
Location & Dates: Azalea Campground – year round; Sunset Campground – Mid-May through Labor Day; Crystal Springs – Memorial Day through Mid- Sept.
Register campers and help visitors find campsites.
Inform large parties of Crystal Springs Campground containing mid-size groups for 7-15 people.
Rove campground and educate campers about park and campground regulations, including proper bear-proof food storage.
Provide information to visitors on recreational opportunities in the park and surrounding areas, including evening campfire programs and other ranger programs.
Actively participate in the parkwide safety program; inform visitors of potential dangers in the park, with a special emphasis on river safety.
Perform minor maintenance when directed, if qualified; report all other maintenance problems to the Campground Supervisor.
Gather information on visitor use and keep the supervisor informed of problems in the campground.
Work directly with Visitor Use Assistants in handling campground fees.
Notify supervisor or law enforcement ranger if illegal activity is observed.
Complete other duties or tasks as may be mutually agreed upon.
Qualifications: Camping experience. Ability to work independently. Good communication skills. Ability to relate to children and adults of diverse backgrounds. A positive attitude. Good listening skills. Experience handling money is desirable. Knowledge of other languages helpful. Would prefer someone with previous campground hosting or extensive camping skills, but will train otherwise qualified people.
Other Requirements: Drivers license required. Physical demands – lots of walking and prolonged standing. Campground is located above 6000 feet. The altitude should be taken into consideration by those with health problems that could be affected by altitude.

Training: Host will receive orientation and training in campground operations, bear management and other topics.
Working Conditions: Hosts will work a minimum of 32 hours per week, which includes weekends. Hosts will have two consecutive weekdays off. Shifts will depend upon campground needs. In return for your volunteer work, you will receive a free camping site. Azalea Campground has water, electric and sewer hookups. Sunset Campground has electric and water hookups. Crystal Springs may also be available for a host site, but will have no hookups. You will need to provide a recreational living unit and/or tent. Volunteer uniforms and a park radio will be provided. Government vehicle may also be provided for official duties.
Area: The campgrounds are around 6400 feet above sea level. The majority of work is performed outdoors in the campgrounds. Summers are warm during the day with cool evening temperatures. Rain is infrequent and during the summer, nuisance insects are usually not a problem. A variety of animals including deer, bear, and squirrel are frequently seen in the campground. Groceries, public showers, post office, a gift shop, restaurants and National Park Service Visitor Center are available at Grant Grove Village which is right across the street from Sunset Campground. Laundry is available at Pine Camp, in the seasonal housing area. Pay phones are available at Grant Grove Village.
