A volunteer camp host position is located at Elderberry Flat Campground, a small 11-site campground located approximately 40 miles northwest of Medford, OR on West Fork Evans Creek (go to www.or.blm.gov\or\resources\recreation\search and search for Elderberry) for more information about the site). Host duties include informing the public of rules and regulations, keeping records of campsite use and visitation, cleaning and stocking restrooms, light maintenance, and trash pickup. The campground is open from mid-March through mid-November, dependent on weather conditions. Starting and ending dates are very flexible, and shorter stays by several camp hosts throughout the summer are possible: if you need a place to stay for several weeks between jobs, this position may be a good fit. Volunteer duties will be 5 days a week, with duties needed especially on weekends and holidays when visitation is higher. Volunteers will be required to pass a background check. Reimbursement for some expenses will be provided, as well as firewood, propane, and drinking water. This campground is rustic (no water, electricity, or dump station) and in a remote area, located approximately a 20 minute drive to cell phone reception and a small gas station/restaurant/mini-mart in Sams Valley. The immediate area surrounding the campground is used by ATVs and 4WD enthusiasts. Volunteers must be comfortable living in a more primitive setting, and be able to communicate and interact with motorized recreationists. In return, you get a shady place next to the creek to spend the summer!
