Volunteers are needed to lead half-day kayak trips on the beautiful lower Laguna Madre in deep South Texas! Sit-on-top Ocean Kayaks are used to paddle the beautiful hypersaline lagoon, one of three in the world whose average depth is 3 feet. In exchange for 24 (per couple) or 32 (per single) hours, RV volunteers are housed on the Laguna Atascosa NWR and get full utilities, hook-up, washer-dryer and communal meeting room. Paddle along the banks of the Laguna Atascosa NWR and enjoy teaching participants a new skill, as well as interpreting this unique ecosystem. Previous trips have included sightings of a variety of hawks, sea turtles, white-tailed deer and the many interesting species found in the sea grass beds. Trips are reserved by a maximum of 10 participants of ages 8+ and varying skill levels. Kayakers, environmental educators, naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts who will enjoy the summertime heat (when not on the water) and are able to load/unload heavy kayaks are encouraged to apply. First aid , CPR certification, and defensive driving training are required. RV volunteers will also assist with visitor center operations and outreach events. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the most beautiful lagoons in the United States. Call us today!
