We are in need of an RV campground host for the Virgin Valley Campground located in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. The Sheldon Refuge is located in a remote part of northwest Nevada near the Oregon state line. The Refuge was created for pronghorn antelope in 1931 and is 575,000 acres of high desert, sagebrush habitat.
The Virgin Valley Campground has an artesian warm spring which has been developed into a swimming pool and piped into a bath house with showers. Visititation is highly variable and ranges from zero to over one hundred people on holiday weekends. From May through June, most visitors come to search for opals on mining claims throughout Virgin Valley. Starting in August, many visitors participate in big game hunting throughout the Refuge. Other activities in the area include bird watching, hiking, and fishing.

Main duties include:
Welcome the public to the Virgin Valley Campground;
Greet visitors in a Fish & Wildlife Service volunteer uniform;
Provide visitor information and short interpretive presentations;
Maintain campground and facilities (including trash pickup, cleaning fire rings, and cleaning outhouses);
Assist with small construction and maintenance projects (installing, replacing and repairing signs, picnic tables and fire rings; assisting maintence staff with misc. small projects);
Assist with logistics for Refuge and volunteer projects (September-October);
Assist with other Refuge projects as skills and ablities allow.
Willing to work 32 hours per week, including Saturday, Sunday, and holidays;
Valid drivers license;
Desire to talk with the public:
Skills and ability to work alone in remote rugged backcountry areas
Tent or RV for five week stay (or longer).
Camp host will be provided a refuge vehicle for travel to other campgrounds within the refuge. Laundry, freezer space, phone, and internet service are available at the Refuge Headquarters located one mile from the campground. Winnemucca, NV or Lakeview, OR are the nearest full-serice communities each about 95 miles away. Denio, NV about 25 miles away is a small community with some services, including a restaurant and the nearest cell phone service.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Trailer/RV Pads Description: Large parking space and full RV hookup with 50A power, water, septic, and phone line is provided, but volunteers will need to provide their own tent, RV, or camper. There is no cell phone coverage at the campground. Phone for calling card calls, internet connection, laundry facilities, and freezer space are available at Refuge Headquarters (one mile from campground).
