The Osceola National Forest is seeking an office assistant during the summer 2018. The Osceola National Forest, located in north Florida between Jacksonville and Tallahassee, is one of the last remaining natural areas in the state of Florida. The expanse of the forest adjoins the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia. Located in the heart of pine flatwoods and wetlands, recreation on the 225,000-acre National Forest is centered around Ocean Pond, a 1760-acre natural lake, and includes campgrounds, fishing, beaches, hiking, fishing, boating, off-highway vehicle and equestrian trails, the Florida National Scenic Trail, the Olustee Battlefield re-enactment and the 13,600-acre Big Gum Swamp Wilderness.
The Osceola NF is located about 45 minutes from Jacksonville (population of 1 million), 40 minutes to Gainesville and the University of Florida, 20 minutes to Lake City with full amenities and the Nature Coast Corridor including the Suwanee River Valley. State parks, rivers and springs, ocean beach access, and cultural amenities abound.
Office assistance is needed a few hours per day to file, provide data entry and track expenses on the office computer, and assist in paperwork processing. Service is flexible to skills of volunteer. Office assistant will answer phones, on occasion update spreadsheets, help the Ranger with compliance, file, and update materials as needed. In addition, some assistance with compliance, gatehouse and campground as needed.
The site is located at Ocean Pond Campground and includes water, sewer, electric with propane reimbursement, approximately a 5 minute drive to the office.
Serve a flexible schedule per week in exchange for a free campsite with full hook ups. The office volunteer position can be filled anytime, right now looking for Sept/Oct - Mar April. Time frame is flexible.
