Resident Volunteers are needed to help staff the refuge visitor center, a restored 1880s planter's house with rocking chairs on the front porch. Volunteers greet and orient visitors, answer the phone, operate small nature shop, , show film, keep visitor center tidy, keep brochure racks filled, open and close gates. Volunteers will also assist the refuge ranger with public programs both on-site and off-site. May also choose to do trail/light maintenance, education programs, live exhibit curation. We require 24 hours/week for each site, whether couple or single, plus opening and closing gates. Gate duty is shared when multiple sites are occupied. Refuge vehicle is provided.
Refuge is located 3 miles north of Monroe with a population of approximately 50,000. Amenities are conveniently located within a few miles of the refuge. Pets are allowed on leash.
Refuge has 4 RV sites with full hookups, located on scenic Bayou DeSiard, with concrete patio, picnic table, laundry and shower facilities, trash dumpster. Propane dealer within 2 miles.
Refuge features a beautiful 1600 acre cypress and tupelo-studded lake and offers year round fishing. There is a 1300 foot pier over the lake which forms a loop off the 1 mile nature trail. Refuge also has other surfaced and unsurfaced trails, a conservation learning center, interactive exhibits, arboretum, raised observation deck, photo and bird blinds, canoe rental (volunteers with trash bags canoe free), great fishing and wildlife watching and some hunting.
