Duties: This position serves as the Campground Host for the boat-in-only campgrounds at Black Canyon and Dayboard 9. These are small campgrounds with primarily weekend used. Duties include providing information to park visitos and explaining campground rules and regulations. The volunteer will be responsible for doing presentations on bear awareness and education. The host checks to ensure that restrooms and other campground facilities are clean and notifies maintenance personnel and volunteer supervisor of campground needs. The host may need to effectively and diplomatically handle minor problems in the campground. They will have a radio and will be able to notify law enforement if additional help is needed.
Other Possible Activities: The host may be asked to complete minor campground maintenance projects that may include: repairing picnic tables, painting sign posts and cleaning fire grates.
Skills: Hosts need to be friendly, be able to maintain daily log forms, and work independantly.
Park Provides: The park provides all volunteers with a uniform shirt and hat, supplies, orientation, training and supervision.
Location Description: The Black Canyon campground is located approximately 6 lake miles from the Ok-A-Beh Marina near Fort Smith Montana. It is a beautiful location in a side canyon pocket of the 71-mile long Bighorn Lake. The campground is surrounded by pine trees and crystal clear water. The lake offers good walleye, small mouth bass and ling fishing as well as spectacular canyon scenery. Temperatures in the summer range from highs in the 80s and 90s with a few day in the hundreds, to lows in the 50s and 60s. Yearly precipitation is 15 to 18 inches. The small community of Fort Smith has a convenience store, gas station, post office and fishing outfitters. Hardin is 42 miles to the north and has all necessary services. Billings, which has a population of approximately 100,000 is 90 miles from Fort Smith.
There is no cell reception at Black Canyon and minimal service in Fort Smith.
Dates: Bighorn Canyon would like to have someone at Black Canyon from mid-June to mid-September but the dates are flexible. HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Other Description: Hosts would need to supply their own boat and means to transport the boat on and off the lake. A small RV pad can be provided for storage of equipment and off lake time if needed.
