Location Description: Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southern Utah, high atop the Paunsaugunt Plateau. At an elevation of 8,000 feet, Bryce Canyon has mild summers, with cool spring and fall temperatures, and winters bringing lots of snow and cold temperatures. The park preserves the amazing geology associated with the eroding Paunsaugunt Plateau on which the park is located. For more details on the park please visit our website (www.nps.gov/brca).
Position Description: Astronomy Volunteers' primary duties include setting up and operating government telescopes 2-3 nights a week for 3-hr formal public stargazing sessions, as well as providing informal 1-2 hr "open house" sun-gazing opportunities with government solar telescope during the day. Additionally, Astronomy Volunteers are required to know the park well enough to assist with staffing of visitor center information desk a few hours per day, answering questions and giving directions. Bryce Canyon is a busy national park with 2.3 million annual visitors and our astronomy presentations are the most popular activities we offer where 200-300 people attend each night. Selection preference is given to not only those with telescope and star-hopping experience, but also those who have experience with "entertaining-while-educating" long lines of visitors waiting for their turn at the eyepiece.
Depending on level of experience/aptitude, astronomy volunteers may also be enlisted to perform the functions of paid Interpretation Rangers which may include: leading guided full moon hikes, presenting engaging laser constellation tours, or researching, developing, and presenting formal multimedia presentations that precede the stargazing sessions.
Required shifts: Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.
Stipend: Our budget does not allow us to pay a stipend, however, we will reimburse out-of-pocket expenses associated with living at Bryce Canyon (e.g., propane charges for RVs).
Season: Housing is available from April 2, 2017 to May 13, 2017. Longer length of stays might be negotiable.
To apply: Complete the online volunteer.gov application OR submit a resume to: Todd_Cullings@nps.gov. IN BLOCK 19 OF YOUR APPLICATION, PLEASE INCLUDE THE NAMES, EMAIL ADDRESSES AND/OR PHONE NUMBERS OF 2-3 PEOPLE WHO CAN SPEAK TO YOUR SUITABILITY FOR THIS POSITION.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Other Description: Limited housing, including a shared bedroom in the astronomy dormitory, or RV pad with hookups, MAY be available. Government quarters are equipped with major appliances and furniture. PETS ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN RVs, not in government quarters. Volunteers are required to work a minimum of 32 hours per week in exchange for a free place to live.
