Glacier National Park protects and preserves access to an important dwindling resource: dark skies. Each summer Glacier’s volunteer astronomers provide over 20,000 visitors with the chance to experience the night sky and solar viewing. Three volunteers, working as astronomers-in-the-park, provide solar and night sky interpretation to the visiting public. Solar viewing is offered in three hour blocks during the afternoon and night sky viewing is available for three hours at night. Telescopes and related equipment/materials are provided by the park.
Orientation will be provided, including an introduction to the park and surrounding areas and interpretive skills. Incumbent should have an existing knowledge of astronomy and telescope operations upon arrival. The volunteer is required to wear a uniform. Prior experience presenting astronomy programs and working with the public is required to be considered for this position. A uniform shirt, nametag, hat and jacket will be provided. Dark colored pants and closed toed shoes are to be provided by the volunteer.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of astronomy and related topics
Working knowledge of telescope operations (day/night)
Orientation to the night sky (constellations, deep sky objects)
Proficiency in public speaking and personal communication
Customer service skills
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Positive and professional approach to the position
Valid driver's license; personal transportation to and from the duty station
Desired Knowledge and Skills
Experience teaching astronomy or conducting astronomy programs and telescope viewing for the public
Experience interacting with the general public and children
Ability to communicate the “big picture” of dark skies and how this relates to protecting national parks
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Trailer/RV Pads Description: Trailer pads with utilities are provided for Astro VIPs at St. Mary. You will need your own RV. Positions on the west side, at Apgar, may have government housing available. Trailer space in a nearby private campground are also available.
