The Alaska Geographic Association and Sitka National Historical Park is seeking an individual to staff the front desk of the park's visitor center as well as the bookstore at Sitka Historical National Park in Sitka, Alaska. The Alaska Geographic Association is a not-for-profit organization, working in cooperation with federal and state land management agencies to provide books, educational materials and interpretive services to visitors of public lands. There are two terms for this position: April 20, 2018- July 15 2018 or July 15, 2018- September 30, 2018.
The volunteer will work a set schedule of six-hour work days five days a week.The sales associate is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Alaska Geographic bookstore at the visitor center and the small sales area at the Russian Bishop’s House. Duties include but are not limited to the following: making sales using the cash register, ringing in cash, credit cards, checks and traveler’s checks; reconciling the cash drawer; logging daily sales journals using an Excel spreadsheet; making bank deposits; offering and selling Alaska Geographic membership program processing membership and renewals paperwork and collecting fees; ringing in discounts and refunds as needed; stocking, cleaning, and straightening shelves; pricing merchandise; completing weekly inventory of stock at both locations; emailing weekly paperwork to central office (inventories, bank deposit slips, requests for merchandise, etc.); maintaining a positive, visitor-friendly attitude as a team member; becoming familiar with surrounding area and events in order to provide accurate and helpful information to visitors; and providing assistance and support to all managers and supervisors as needed. Onsite training is provided. Applicants will be required to have a federal background check and be fingerprinted. Associate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment; prioritize multiple tasks; interact with the public in a friendly and helpful manner; and develop and maintain good communication and relationship with staff. Most work is completed inside the visitor center and Russian Bishop’s House. Loading, unloading, and transporting inventory may occur outdoors in inclement weather. Associate must be able to occasionally lift and transport boxes of books or maps, some of which weigh in excess of fifty pounds. Bending, lifting and prolonged standing are required for this position. This job description does not list all duties of the job.
