Description: Camp host positions are presently available mid-May 2018 through September 21, 2018 at the Idaho Fish and Game’s Horsethief Reservoir Fishing Access Area (FAA). This popular reservoir is nine miles east of Cascade, Idaho and accessible by paved and maintained gravel roads. The volunteer host position is under the direct supervision of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Treasure Valley Family YMCA Camp at Horsethief, not Idaho Parks and Recreation so a new application must be made if you are interested in this position.
Horsethief FAA offers visitors 119 primitive campsites, two developed boat ramps and three fishing docks. Fish and Game’s volunteer camp hosts often work independently to help us ensure that the area is kept clean and safe for visitors. Duties include greeting campers and providing them with camping, fishing or boating information; making regular rounds of campgrounds and fishing areas; keeping restrooms clean and well stocked between Fish and Game’s weekly cleaning schedule; informing Fish and Game staff of any needed supplies, such as registration envelopes, toilet paper and cleaning supplies. Most importantly these volunteers act as goodwill ambassadors by responding to visitor questions or concerns about area fishing and wildlife. Because our hosts work independently, they must know how to interact with visitors in a calm and professional manner, yet take steps to contact local law enforcement for additional help when a situation requires it.
IDFG Volunteers Camp Hosts receive a Per Diem to help recover their food costs for each of the days of the week the host is on duty. Volunteer hosts must provide their own fully self-contained Recreational Vehicle (RV). A primitive designated campsite is provided for the host while on duty although no sewer or electrical services are available so it is best if applicants have solar power or a generator back up available for their use. Regular sewage pumping of the hosts RV, fuel for personal generators and propane, uniform hats, t-shirts and sweaters are also provided. Host should be available to work all weekends and holidays during this time but arrangements may be made in advance if needed.
Horsethief offers plenty of good fishing, bird and wildlife viewing. Horsethief Reservoir FAA is located nine miles east of Cascade, Idaho and Cascade Reservoir. Horsethief Lake is stocked regularly with trout and has a great return to creel success rate. Cascade Lake is also a super area for boating and fishing on your off duty hours. Cascade Lake offers plenty of large trout, smallmouth bass and some of Idaho’s largest yellow perch. For the wildlife lover, Horsethief is visited by many types of wildlife such as osprey, deer, elk and moose, to name a few.
