Description: Lava Lands Visitor Center is the information hub of Newberry National Volcanic Monument within the Deschutes National Forest. The Center is located 8 miles south of Bend, OR. Lava Butte a 500 foot cinder cone volcano hovers over the visitor center. Lave River Cave, a popular show cave is just 1.5 miles down the road. Visitors can explore many volcanic features on the Monument and also enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating, fishing and camping.
Commitment: 8 hour shifts with half hour lunch, 4-days per week alternating with 5-days per week. Consecutive days off guaranteed, unless otherwise negotiated. Interns will be required to submit information for background check prior to agency final acceptance. Internship commitment will be secured using a standard agency volunteer agreement.

Compensation and Housing: Uniform, $15 /service day reimbursement for allowed expenses, and housing in a furnished 20 foot camper trailer. Camper will be parked in close proximity to Lava Lands Visitor Center; amenities include water, sewer, electric and propane. There are no laundry facilities on site but they are available in the nearby communities of Sunriver, OR and Bend, OR. No guests or pets are allowed in government housing. Interns are expected to maintain a clean household, and will be checked-in and -out of housing. Expect routine, scheduled housing checks by supervisor or housing official. Intern must provide their own bedding, towels, electronics, food/drink, and recreational gear.
Personal vehicle is required due to location. Cell service can be limited but is available in the Visitor Center area. Internet is available in the Visitor Center area as well. Housing is located near many trails, the Deschutes River, and is convenient to access Highway 97. Visitor Center is within walking distance.
Job Duties: Uniformed intern position duties include, but are not limited to: welcoming and orienting Monument visitors, providing in-depth information on Monument sites, assisting with trip planning within the Monument. Cash handling and recordkeeping experience is recommended. Opportunities for formal Interpretation include Patio Talks and Guided Walks on the Trail of the Molten Land, and Jr. Forest Ranger activities. Informal interpretation will be conducted while roving.
Individuals will be assigned special projects according to their skills, interests, and specific school internship requirements. Lifting, walking, and presentation capabilities required. Willingness to assist with light maintenance, trail work, compliance tracking and cashiering preferred. Training opportunities include CPR, First Aid, general staff training and other potential topics depending on interest of individual.
Special Skills: Intern must be able to perform required duties with minimal supervision after orientation, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and possess a consistently friendly and helpful attitude while on duty; Forest Service uniform will be provided and worn during working hours; knowledge of Forest Service history and Deschutes National Forest recreation geography and policies is helpful, but not required.
Location: Positions provide visitor services based out of Lava Lands Visitor Center, the information hub of the Monument and Lava River Cave, a popular show cave. The Visitor Center is located at the base of Lava Butte, a cinder cone volcano that erupted 7,000 years ago creating a 9 square mile lava flow. These sites comprise the Northern unit of the Monument. At the Southern end of the Monument is Newberry Caldera, which contains two lakes to fish or boat, a stunning waterfall, miles of trails for hikers and bikers of any ability and many other volcanic features to explore.
