Interpretation and Visitor Services Assistant
Great Sand Dunes is seeking friendly, motivated people to assist our summer park operations, June through September. If you're able to assist during part of that time or the full time, please apply!
The individual(s) would assist park staff in managing visitor center operations during the peak visitation season. The volunteer(s) are required to cover weekends and may require working in the evenings to help with Moon Hikes, Night Sky Tours, and Evening Programs. Duties would include: provide customer service at a visitor center desk for 4-5 hours; manage the park’s Junior Ranger Program by distributing Junior Ranger activity books, review the books, and provide badges or patches upon completion; monitor and answer the visitor center phone and radio; maintain interpretive and informational handouts; provide 1-2 hours of informal interpretation at high visitor use areas, support off-site or on-site park events, provide formal interpretation at the visitor center. Additional duties include, processing and safeguarding lost and found items in accordance with park policies, distributing and receiving park and local community information, responding to park inquiries via email or mail, and reporting law enforcement, safety, and maintenance issues to appropriate staff. Most of these duties are performed indoors at high elevations but some require work under hot and cold temperatures, and outdoor environmental factors – wind, heat. The park elevation is 8200'.
Enjoy amazing scenery in beautiful Colorado. Activities in the surrounding area include: hiking, camping, skiing, hot springs, wildlife viewing, stargazing, and outstanding solitude. Alamosa is nearby (34 miles) with access to groceries, shopping, health clinics, movie theaters, restaurants, and Adams State University. The park will issue shirts, jackets, and baseball caps to be returned at the end of the season. Due to remoteness reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required. RV park housing is available. Reimbursement of propane and other supplies is provided. A background investigation may be required if volunteer(s) will have access to government buildings and property.
