Interpretation and Visitor Services Assistant
Great Sand Dunes is seeking friendly, motivated people to assist our summer park operations, May through October. If you're able to assist during part of that time or the full time, please apply!
The individual(s) would assist park staff in managing visitor center operations during the peak visitation season. The volunteer(s) are required to cover weekends and may require working in the evenings to help with Moon Hikes, Night Sky Tours, and Evening Programs. Duties would include: provide customer service at a visitor center desk for 4-5 hours; manage the park’s Junior Ranger Program by distributing Junior Ranger activity books, review the books, and provide badges or patches upon completion; monitor and answer the visitor center phone and radio; maintain interpretive and informational handouts; provide 1-2 hours of informal interpretation at high visitor use areas, support off-site or on-site park events, provide formal interpretation at the visitor center. Additional duties include, processing and safeguarding lost and found items in accordance with park policies, distributing and receiving park and local community information, responding to park inquiries via email or mail, and reporting law enforcement, safety, and maintenance issues to appropriate staff. Most of these duties are performed indoors at high elevations but some require work under hot and cold temperatures, and outdoor environmental factors – wind, heat. The park elevation is 8200'.
Enjoy amazing scenery in beautiful Colorado. Activities in the surrounding area include: hiking, camping, skiing, hot springs, wildlife viewing, stargazing, and outstanding solitude. Alamosa is nearby (34 miles) with access to groceries, shopping, health clinics, movie theaters, restaurants, and Adams State University.
Conditions of Volunteering
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Due to new regulations, both fingerprints and pictures are now required.
Valid state driver's license required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.
You will be required to wear a volunteer uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform will be provided.
You may be asked to work weekends and holidays.
Must be able to work on uneven terrain and be comfortable working in high altitude locations.
Must provide your own RV / Trailer (with a bathroom within) and camping / cooking equipment. An RV Pad with hook-ups will be available at the park's expense (RV length is limited). Reimbursement of propane and other supplies is provided.
IMPORTANT: Full hookups are available. A commitment of at least 32 hours per week is required. Maximum motorhome length is 30 feet; maximum trailer length is 25 feet. Please include the length of your motorhome or trailer in your application. Please also note that Great Sand Dunes is a remote, wilderness location. The volunteer sites do not have cell service or internet access, though phone and internet are both available to volunteers at the nearby visitor center (with the completion of a background check prior to your appointment). Our season dates are from May through October. Partial season assignments may be possible. The Volunteer RV sites do not include bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities, picnic tables, or fire rings. You are welcome to bring your own picnic table and fire rings to use. The sites are narrow, curved, unpaved, and unleveled. There are no pull-through sites available. If assigned to RV site #4, longer hook-up cords and hoses may be needed as the site’s hook-ups are on the opposite side for most RV models.
