Connect with the cosmos at Aztec Ruins!
Aztec Ruins National Monument is an easily accessible place for visitors and locals to connect with the night sky during star talks, moon walks, telescope viewings and solstice events at this World Heritage site. If you have an interest and/or experience with the night sky and would like to assist with night sky programs - join our Night Sky Team!
This monument currently has trained/experienced Night Sky Rangers, three Dobsonian telescopes, one Hydrogen Alpha Solar Telescope, and eyepieces as needed for these events. Volunteers do not need to have their own equipment.
Night Sky Team volunteers will:
Participate in team training (annual):
Become familiar with the NPS and Aztec Ruins National Monument
Learn about the night sky - constellations, telescopes, light pollution, cultural history and more.
Discover techniques and tips for night sky interpretation.
Observe at least one night sky event at Aztec Ruins
Be part of a night sky events email list
Coordinate with rangers regarding event availabilty - we request an intent to assist with at least four events during the upcoming year.
Ways to Participate: (choose one or choose many!)
Star viewings: When comfortable, be willing to operate a telescope during a star viewing and/or after a star talk.
Moon walks: assist rangers on monthly moonlight tours of West Ruin, possibly utilizing a telescope.
Constellation stories: learn a few cultural stories to share with visitors.
Solar viewings: use the park's Hydrogen Alpha Solar Telescope to safely conduct solar viewings for park visitors. (Very flexible.)
Solstice events: all night sky team members are requested to assist with summer and winter solstice events.
Astrophotography: depending on interest/ability, astrophotography is encouraged as a way to participate, and also to teach these skills to park visitors!
We intend to offer 2-4 night sky events per month, June through September, with training events in May.
Join us! The sky is the limit!
