Job Title: Visitor Center/Memorial

Share your love of history with National Park visitors. Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses may be available. Additional awards may be given based on the number of hours donated.
Goal or outcome of the job:
Provide park visitors with opportunities to make intellectual and emotional connections to the War of 1812, Battle of Lake Erie, and the men that fought in them and to the peace that has lasted since 1815.
Volunteer is responsible for assisting in the visitor center. Operation tasks include greeting park visitors and providing information on cultural, historical, and natural points of interest throughout the park and in the area. Some knowledge of the park and local area will be necessary to answer visitor questions, including location and how to access attractions from the visitor center. Volunteer advises visitors of park regulations and explains the importance of such for protection of the site, resources, and/or safety of visitors. Volunteer provides administrative support by responding to phone inquiries, keeping statistics, greeting special groups, and counting visitors. Volunteer may be asked to assist park staff in performing ongoing projects such as copying, filing, labeling, and preparing mailings. The volunteer may operate a cash register and help in Eastern National Bookstore. I
Good communication and interpersonal skills is the most important skill. Knowledge of local area and resources would also be helpful along with retail sales experience, and the ability to use office equipment and a telephone.
Training or other preparation required to begin:
An orientation course and on the job training will be provided. This course orientation will include training in the National Park Service mission, safety, and basic interpretive skills.
Most work will be outdoors. Volunteers should in good physical condition and capable of standing or walking outdoors in hot, cold, or rainy weather.
