Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of incredible Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting/canoeing. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-100 degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.). Park elevations range from 1,924 ft at Rio Grande Village to 7,832 ft at Emory Peak, with Panther Junction at 3,800 ft.
We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to help staff the Panther Junction Visitor Center and Chisos Basin Visitor Center from May 1-July 31 and August 1 - October 31, 2018. Volunteers will provide park orientation and assistance to our visitors while working behind the desk and on the trail! We need at minimum a 3-month commitment and the ability to work weekends and holidays when our visitors are exploring our Park.
A total of 32 hours per week is divided as follows,
- For 24 hours a week: operates a visitor information desk, answers repetitive questions in a friendly and professional manner, writes multiple backcountry permits, operates two different cash registers, opens, closes and operates the visitor center independently, and maintains a neat building.
- For 8 hours a week: Roving park trails and interacting with visitors; other projects possible as decided upon with supervisor.
Skills needed: Desire to work with people is necessary. Energy for the rewarding work of being available to the public for 8 hours; ability to communicate in a friendly, patient and helpful manner is essential. Experience working with a cash register is helpful; experience with computers is essential.
Location information: The Panther Junction Visitor Center is located in the Headquarters building, centrally located within the park. The Chisos Basin Visitor Center is located about 10 miles from Panther Junction.
Within the park are the following amenities: post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. From Panther Junction, Terlingua is 30 miles away and has a small grocery store, hardware store, churches, restaurants, and lodging. Marathon is 70 miles away and has limited shopping, a clinic, churches, restaurants, and lodging. Alpine is 100 miles away and has most necessities including: supermarkets, hardware stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, and a university. The nearest large cities are Midland/Odessa at 195 miles and El Paso at 295 miles.
An RV pad with full hookups is provided with this opportunity. An efficiency apartment or 1-bedroom apartment may be available.
