This position is located approximately 70 miles south of Tucson, AZ on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was established in 1985 with the specific mission to reestablish the endangered Masked Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus ridgwayi) in the wild. The candidate selected for this caretaker position will be responsible for the safety, health and well-being of captive flock through the performance of documented husbandry practices and protocols. Much of the work will be performed at the outdoor facility located near headquarters as well as an indoor facility located 45 minutes from headquarters so a refuge vehicle will be provided in order to perform the duties at multiple locations on the refuge.
Due to the remote location of the refuge, housing is available with this position. No pets.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Feeding and watering birds
Cleaning and disinfecting food and water dishes
Cleaning, disinfection and maintenance of bird enclosures/runs
Observing bird behavior for signs of illness or disease
Gathering vegetation from the field to be used for housing, bedding and/or nesting
Cutting/clearing vegetation within the enclosure to maintain small walking paths
Cutting/clearing vegetation outside the flight pens to maintain a vegetation free environment inside and around the electric containment fence.
Minor repairs to fencing and enclosures
Provide assistance in construction and maintenance of bird enclosures
Sweep and mop floors at indoor facility
Assist with minor veterinary procedures
Assist with predator control
Previous experience in animal husbandry especially in the care and management of captive game birds including food preparation, and maintaining a safe and sanitary working area for all animals highly desirable but not required.
The refuge is seeking a candidate that is interested in aviculture, animal welfare and avian conservation with the ability to follow strict bio-security practices and an attention to detail. Candidates should exhibit a strong work ethic while working independently. Regular duties may require lifting up to 50 pound feed bags and working outdoors in extremely hot, humid environmental conditions. Additional requirements include excellent record keeping and observational skills and a willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, weekdays and holidays.
