Stretching inland from the Gulf beaches into the bottomland hardwood forests of the Brazos and San Bernard River basins, the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge provides vital habitat for migrating and wintering birds as well as resident wildlife. This 73,500 acre refuge contains some of the last remnants of old growth Columbia Bottomland forests in coastal Texas.
Volunteers play an important role in the maintenance and public use programs at the refuge. Volunteers directly affect the quality and success of refuge operations; visitors’ safety, comfort, and enjoyment; and the public’s understanding and image of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Opportunity for Maintenance Volunteer or Maintenance Volunteer Couple
The refuge seeks general maintenance volunteers to assist the refuge staff with upkeep of public use areas, facilities and equipment. Ideal candidates should have experience operating power tools and maintenance equipment. Experience with small engine repair and maintenance will be a tremendous help. Volunteers will be relied upon to help with mowing, maintaining trails and pollinator gardens, and general upkeep of field office and public use facilities.
Public use duties include working special events, restocking brochures, cleaning the interior and exterior of public use areas including restroom facilities and kiosks, and some office/clerical work. Additional duties may vary depending on individual interest, skills, and talents.
Housing: The refuge has 2 RV pads with electrical, water, and sewer provided in exchange for 24 hours/week of service for an individual or 32 hours/week for a couple, combined. Work hours and daily schedule are flexible. Shared laundry facilities are provided on site.
Local Information: San Bernard NWR is located in Brazoria, Texas situated near several coastal communities where local grocery stores, restaurants, shopping, and beaches are a short 20-30 minute drive from your RV site.
