This 71,000-acre park features sand dunes, beech/maple and pine/oak forests, rivers, inland lakes, miles of Lake Michigan beach, two offshore islands. It also embraces 366 historic structures and cultural landscapes including a significant historic farming district, a lighthouse, two campgrounds and 105 miles of hiking trails.
This position is with Historic Sleeping Bear (HSB), an official non-profit partner group of the National Park Service, assisting in the preservation and interpretation of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s historic resources. We are seeking a qualified individual to provide general support for staff; assist with organizing and promoting all programs and special events, posting for social media and website, writing media releases and feature articles; soliciting sponsorships and volunteers for fundraisers; designing print materials; set up and tear down for events; distributing brochures and flyers. Raise public awareness of our mission, projects and programs. Brand promotion.
The position is for 8-10 weeks, 35 hours per week, starting sometime between late May and the second week of June, working through mid-August. Dates are flexible. This may include some weekend or evening hours. The schedule will vary and the volunteer must have some flexibility.
Candidate should be a self-starter possessing good computer and writing skills; be creative, conscientious, organized and detail-oriented; have experience with desktop publishing programs such as InDesign, Illustrator or Publisher software; possess good oral communications skills; ability to easily climb stairs and lift 40 pounds. Experience in event planning and coordination. Working knowledge of social media platforms. Photography and/or video experience, and knowledge of Word Press a plus. Ideal for college students in their junior or senior year studying historic preservation, graphic design, marketing, public relations, communications or nonprofit management.
