Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is seeking a resident visitor center and part-time maintenance volunteer couple for the summer of 2019 in beautiful Homer, Alaska. Greet visitors at a world class center, and share the stories of seabirds, marine mammals, and native cultures with folkss from all over the world!
ABOUT THE REFUGE
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge's headquarters, located in Homer, Alakas, was established to conserve marine mammals, seabirds and other migratory birds, and the marine resources upon which they rely along the Alaska coast. The Refuge's 3.4 million acres include the spectacular volcanic islands of the Aleutian Chain, the seabird cliffs of the remote Pribilof Islands, and icebound lands washed by the Chukchi Sea, providing essential habitat for some 40 million seabirds, representing more than 30 species. Although many of the individual islands and refuge lands are closed to public use to protect wildlife, Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, in Homer, provides visitors an opportunity to view wildlife from a mainland location, attracting more than 60,000 visitors to the center annually.
We are looking for a friendly, energetic couple to join our team for the 2019 summer season in Homer, Alaska. This opportunity is for a couple traveling with their RV, with experience in visitor services, and enjoys working with people and providing excellent customer service. Knowledge or willingness to learn about nature, ecology, wildlife, and plants including common species.
Visitor Services - Welcome visitors at Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, provide information and an orientation to the Refuge, Visitor Center, and Kachemak Bay, operate cash register in the bookstore, assist staff in the preparation of educational materials depending on interest, and light cleaning and maintenance of visitor center. Assist with special events including spring Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. Will work weekends. Must enjoy working with people and providing excellent customer service.
Maintenance - 1 individual will work 1/2 time with our maintenance team, assisting in the maintenance of grounds, facilities, vehicles and equipment. Assist with construction projects as needed. Carpentry and mechanical skills a plus as is the ability to use hand tools, trimmers, push and riding mowers. Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
Minimum requirements to become a Resident Volunteer: provide self-contained recreational vehicle; volunteer for entirety of season; for a couple, be willing to contribute 32 hours per week per individual. An RV pad with electrical, water, and sewer provided in exchange for service. Background checks will be required.
