POSITION DESCRIPTION: A Retired Couple is wanted as RECREATION HOSTS for Dripping Springs Natural Area and Recreation Site. Dripping Springs Natural Area (DSNA) is located within the 2014 designated Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument. The natural area is 10 miles from Las Cruces, NM at the western base of the Organ Mountains at an elevation of 6,000 feet.

The hosting couples will be provided a furnished residence at DSNA rent free with utilities included. A washer and dryer are provided in another building, and shared with other Volunteers. A $12/ day reimbursement is provided to each Host on their scheduled working days. A government vehicle is furnished for official use and shared with other Dripping Springs Volunteers. Training, equipment, and materials are provided as necessary. A Host Couple works together as a team 3 days a week, and every other Wednesday.
The duties include: Enhancing visitor experience, opening and closing gates and the visitor center; staffing the visitor center; hiking trails, ensuring compliance with area rules and fees; and light maintenance. The Dripping Springs Visitor Center is staffed with day volunteers to help the Hosts.
LOCATION DESCRIPTION: The Organ Mountains have an arid climate with average annual rainfall between 8 to 12 inches. Rainfall varies yearly with greater precipitation at higher elevations. There are over 800 species of plants found in the Organ Mountains, and approximately 80 species of mammals, 185 species of birds, and 60 species of reptiles and amphibians. DSNA is approximately 2,850 acres in the Organ Mountains, and includes a visitor center, La Cueva Picnic Area, Dripping Springs, and 5 miles of hiking trails. DSNA is open for day use only to the public for recreation and educational activities such as hiking, picnicking, sightseeing, or studying nature and history.
