Since 1994, the National Park Service and California State Parks have cooperatively managed their contiguous redwood parklands. Together, Redwood National and State Parks manages 133,000 acres to preserve, protect, and make available to all people, for their inspiration, enjoyment, and education, the forests, scenic coastlines, prairies, and streams and their associated natural and cultural values, which define this World Heritage Site; and to help people forge emotional, intellectual, and recreational ties to these parks.
Opportunity Featured Summary: Redwood National and State Parks seeks an Outdoor Recreation and Interpretation Volunteer/Intern for the Division of Interpretation, Education, and Partnerships. Throughout the summer the volunteer will assist with operating the Hiouchi Visitor Center, conduct hiking roves on park trails, and assist with ranger-led interpretation and recreation programing, including the popular Smith River Kayak Tours.
Description of Duties: The volunteer will assist in the operation of Redwood National and State Parks' Hiouchi Visitor Center. Duties include providing quality customer service and frontline orientation, information, and/or interpretation about the parks to diverse visitors in person and by telephone; handling cash and credit transactions for cooperating association (Redwood Parks Conservancy) merchandise; performing daily visitor center opening/closing and accounting; and, conducting park roves to gather information about park resources and conditions, and to provide informal contacts with visitors.
In addition, the volunteer/intern will assist with interpretive and recreational programming including the Smith River Kayak Tours— ranger-led kayak programs presented multiple times each week during the summer. Applicants must be able to swim, be comfortable in class II rapids (though no previous experience is required), be able to repeatedly lift loads of 50 lb, and have sure footing on uneven and slick surfaces.
The ideal candidates for this position are outgoing individuals with strong communication skills and an attention to detail. Volunteers must possess good customer service skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with cross-functional teams.
Time Commitment: The ideal candidate would be available from April 30-September 29, 2018, but dates may be negotiable to accommodate student schedules. The volunteer/intern will volunteer 40 hours/week (5, 8-hour days) in order to qualify for free park housing in either Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park or Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.
Legal: The selected volunteer must pass a federal background check.
Must represent the highest standards of professional behavior including dress, punctuality, visitor contacts, and interpersonal relationships.
Previous experience (and enjoys) working with diverse people.
Ability to work safely in a variety of environments, including those encountered during the Smith River Kayak Tours.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse park visitors and park personnel.
Ability to be calm and courteous during frequently busy work conditions and in emergency situations.
Valid driver’s license. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended as park housing is remote, most services and shopping are located several miles from park housing and workplaces, and no suitable public transportation may be available.
Temporary housing is available in either Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park (near Hiouchi, CA) or Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park (about 8 miles south of Crescent City, CA). Park housing is shared by 2-5 roommates who typically have private bedrooms but share kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas.

Experience operating point of sales (POS) system, cash register, and accounting procedures for a retail bookstore/gift shop.
