The volunteer will perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, roofing, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. The volunteer will work for the Maintenance Manager at Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York.
(Volunteers will not be required to perform any task that he/she feels is beyond their physical limits.)
Actively participate in a safe workplace culture.
Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
Assist higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
Obtain, carry, lift and position equipment, parts and tools needed for installation and repair.
Perform specifically assigned tasks such as removing floor tile, roofing, insulation, paint, etc.
Follow established safety procedures and practices when using hand and power equipment.
Perform routine plumbing repairs, including: cut pipe to marked size; cuts or drills holes as marked; screw, bolt or attach hangers; caulk or seal areas as directed; tighten connections and valves; use plunger or snake to unclog drains; thread pipe as directed, where tools have been set up by others; and perform other similar tasks following very specific instructions.
Perform minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools to cut, drill and assemble work products.
Perform minor electrical repairs such as replacing light bulbs and switches and hanging fixtures. Change filters in HVAC equipment.
Perform routine painting work to include covering items with drop cloths; clearing the work area; setting up and securing scaffolding; and preparing the surfaces for drywall finishing by spackling, taping and sanding surfaces.
Clean tools and equipment and keeps work areas clean and orderly.
Collect trash and debris from common areas.
Perform routine landscaping work to include operating push and riding mowers, power edgers and trimmers. Prepare ground for planting, lays sod and plants flowers or shrubs per simple drawings.
Occasionally operate a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport supplies, materials, equipment and tools to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
Load and unload vehicles by hand. Ensure that cargo is properly secured and protected from the weather.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Knowledge of simple and common trade practices.
Knowledge of safety procedures, including how to lift and move heavy objects, and the safe operation and control of large, riding mowers and similar types of specialized equipment.
Ability to learn limited woodworking techniques to assist in assembling and installing or repairing items or structures; ability to learn the common and typical tasks of the painting trade to assist higher graded painters; and ability to learn the use of a variety of plumbing tools, parts, equipment and materials to assist in plumbing tasks.
Ability to develop skills needed to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, putty surfaces to prepare for painting and develop skills need to brush out, roll on and spray coat materials.
Ability to make simple measurements using tape measure and square.
Ability to learn the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools to use simple hand tools such as hammer, saw, brush and roller, screwdriver, wrench, electric drill/saw and other power tools in a safe and acceptable manner.
Ability to operate light vehicles and equipment such as pick-up truck.
Ability to operate grounds equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, edgers, trimmers, power washers and leaf blowers.
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to work as a member of a team to assist other personnel during work assignments.
Requires standing for long periods of time.
Work requires light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs.
May be required to lift, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
Physical effort and coordination are required in operating park vehicles and equipment.
Volunteer is exposed to the possibility of scrapes, cuts, and bruises.
Must be able to work both indoors and out in all types of weather situations. Seneca Falls weather is unpredictable and can change quickly. The area experiences high winds, rain, high heat, extreme cold, and snow.
The volunteer will agree to a schedule at the discretion of the volunteer supervisor.
Volunteer will notify the Facilities Manager of planned absences within a reasonable amount of time if the volunteer is unable to perform scheduled duties.
Volunteer must wear closed-toe footwear.
Safety and protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as needed to perform assigned tasks. This includes, but not limited to, eye protection, ear protection, gloves and dusk masks.
Government Vehicles & Property / Personal Equipment
The volunteer will use a government vehicle when required.
Volunteer will not be using a government computer.
Volunteer’s personal vehicles/equipment will not be used while on duty.
