Imperial National Wildlife Refuge is accepting applications for four RV resident volunteers to join us November 1, 2018 - March 31, 2019. The 25,768-acre refuge protects 30 miles of wildlife habitat along the lower Colorado River, providing resting, feeding, and nesting habitat for a variety of migratory birds and other wildlife, and includes more than 15,000 acres of federally designated wilderness. Hiking, birdwatching, boating, hunting, and fishing are common recreational activities.
Imperial National Wildlife refuge is located 40 miles north of Yuma, AZ (pop.~100,000), which has a variety of amenities for shopping, fuel, restaurant and groceries, medical care, entertainment, etc. Martinez Lake is a small community located about 3 miles from the Refuge, and has a post office, restaurant, and convenience store for basic needs.
Job description: Each volunteer and/or couple splits their work hours between visitor services and maintenance. Individuals work 24 hours per week (3, 8-hr days) to qualify for free RV hookup. Refuge vehicle is provided for use during work hours.
Greet and orient visitors; provide interpretation and tours. Assist with special events and environmental education activities.
Answer phones, housekeeping, organize and distribute brochures. Occasional filing, data entry, or other office tasks.
Tortoise, aquarium, and desert garden care.
Cleaning and upkeep of Refuge and visitor facilities, including restrooms, kiosks, and trails.
Sign replacement, fence maintenance, and painting.
Occasional assistance with biological field work.
Other activities are subject to individuals training and skills may include: mechanical work, tractor operation, mowing, carpentry, and equipment maintenance. Previous completion of motorboat operator certification, ATV, UTV, or FWS agricultural tractor certifications are highly desirable.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Trailer/RV Pads Description: RV pads with electric (30/50 amp), water, and sewer hook-ups. Free wifi access at RV site. Volunteer building with full kitchen, bathroom, washer/dryer, landline telephone, BBQ grill, and fire ring. Cellular service is limited to Verizon. Pets must be on leash.
