The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests' Eastern Divide Ranger District is looking for volunteers to serve as Hosts at the Cascades Recreation Area in 2017.
About 150,000 visitors a year visit the Cascades. Without question, Cascade Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia and possibly on the entire East Coast. Little Stony Creek falls over a vertical cliff in several different streams. Several streams cascade a couple times on the way down, while others fall the whole distance of the falls.
The 69-foot falls crash into a large pool surrounded by two hundred-foot cliff walls, from which large ice formations hang in the winter. The falls are also fairly easy to view, with wooden stairs and platforms on one side of the pool allowing a visitor to get very close to the falls as well as allowing a photographer many different angles for photographs. Swimming in the pool area below the falls is not recommended because of various hazards.
The Cascades host site is only 4 miles from the town of Pembroke and 30 minutes from Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech.
The Cascades Recreation Area offers picnic areas, a scenic 4 mile trail loop to the falls, native trout fishing, and accessible restrooms at the trailhead.
Host Duties: The Host would serve the visitors by assuring fee payment, answering questions, providing directions, offering help in time of emergency by calling our Law Enforcement Officer, and performing light maintenance (example: litter pick-up, cleaning bathrooms, restocking fee envelopes and toilet paper, etc).
In exchange for your valuable volunteer service, we will provide you with a campsite with full hook-ups (water, electric, telephone and waste water holding tank). Cell phone service is generally available and depends on the carrier. Internet is available on site.
For scheduling purposes, we ask for at least a one-month commitment. In exchange for a free campsite and utilities, we ask our volunteers to help out at least 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, per person. Because weekends are the busiest time, "days off" will be scheduled for the less busy weekdays.
