We are looking for a friendly, energetic couple to fill an 8 week position as Visitor Center Volunteers/RV Hosts at the Tetlin NWR Visitor Center. This opportunity is for a couple traveling with their RV trained in visitor services and communicating effectively with people.
The Tetlin Visitor Center, Alaska Highway Milepost 1229, is 8 miles NW of the Alaska/Canada border and 90 SE of Tok. The facility is a beautiful log center with a large deck offering spectacular views of the refuge and some of its wild inhabitants. Inside are area exhibits and Native arts demonstrations.
Volunteers help regular staff to provide normal visitation hours, provide light maintenance, lead short trail hikes on moderately steep grades, and make daily visits to Seaton Recreation Area (approximately 5 miles from the Visitor Center) for light maintenance and roving interpretation. Our volunteers are considered international travelers, work four days per week for a total of 32 hours, and may receive limited reimbursements for food and travel (fuel) receipts. The provided RV site includes a generator, in-ground sewer, and water. The eight week position is from May 21 to July 16, 2018.
Applicant should have prior experience in communicating with the public, physical ability to lead hikes on a moderately steep grade, and be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Each one must possess a current CPR/First Aid Certification, recent references, and a valid driver's license. Volunteers will be asked to work independently following orientation and guidance from refuge staff.
