Location: Bear Paw, 16 miles south of Chinook Montana is one of 38 Nez Perce National Historic Park sites and part of and the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. It is the site of the last battle of the Nez Perce Flight of 1877.
The battlefield is minimal developed, including a picnic shelter, pit toilets and 2 miles of trail. There is no visitor contact station and those services are provided by our partners, the Blaine County Museum in Chinook.
Duties: All duties are done outdoors at a minimum of 4 hours day, usually closer to 6hrs a day. Hopefully last summer was an exception but most days were in the 90s, some breaking 100 and poor air quality due to numerous wildfires. Any candidate should carefully consider these conditions.
The primary duty would to assist with visitor contacts on the busier days; last year the busiest days in descending order were Wednesday, Sunday, and Saturday. Weekend work including the 4th of July and Labor Day holidays would be expected. We do not have set program times and attempt to interact with each visitor appropriate to their interest level, some want to take it in on their own and others want a full tour.
The secondary duties are maintenance duties. We are responsible for cleaning and restocking the toilets, picking up trash and ground maintenance including mowing and weeding. There are bigger projects we work on when time allows, replacing signs, painting structures or filling in pot holes on the dirt road as examples. Assistance not required but greatly appreciated.
The position is unique and has its challenges but could be incredibly rewarding for the right person.
Dates and Hours:
05/01/2018 – 09/05/2018. End date is flexible. Being available in May for a one week long training is required for anyone providing interpretive services at the site due to the culturally sensitive nature of the site.
Would be needed a minimum of two days a week, but we would be happy to work beside you for more than that.
Daily hours vary based on visitation but anticipate 9am to 3pm. Staying later is not uncommon if visitors arrive wanting a tour later in the day.
There is no housing available or reimbursement for housing costs. A uniform shirt will provided and reimbursement up to $40 for pants if needed
